Cajuns Women’s Tennis Opens Homestand With Victory Over SFA

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team opened a three-match homestand with a 4-2 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Friday at Cajun Courts.

"This has been a continual growing experience for us," head coach Greg Harkins said. "We have been working on competing match after match, and we saw what we can achieve today when the whole team comes together. It was a great win for us and another step in the right direction."

The Cajuns (5-7) picked up the doubles point with a win by Nelo Phiri and Nicole Breaux over Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca at the No.1 position, 8-4. Melissa Burckhartt and Julie Cremers also won in doubles defeating Laura Servise and Rachel Pierce on court two, 8-5.

After the Ladyjacks (3-5) evened the contest at 1-all with a singles win on courts four, Burckhartt put the Cajuns back in front winning 7-6, 6-0 at the No.3 position.

Things tightened back up after a win at the No. 2 position by SFA, but Juliette Clement responded pulling Louisiana within a point of clinching gritting out a three-set win against Laura Servise on court six, 6-2, 3-6, 7-6.

Cremers clinched the match on court five pulling out a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision from Macarena Sedano-Acosta.

"I was proud of the team as a whole today," Harkins added. "We have been making little improvements each time out and it was nice for the girls to get a hard fought win. Our focus today was to compete from the second we stepped on the court until the last point was secured. The girls were determined and their willingness to compete all way through helped us win the match. We will take what we learned today and build on the experience for our next match."

The Ragin' Cajuns continue the homestand on Sunday at 2 p.m. as the squad hosts Texas – Pan American at Cajun Courts. Admission to the contest is free and live scoring will be available on RaginCajuns.com.
