LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team opened its home slate with a strong showing on Saturday at Cajun Courts with a sweep of Lamar and Jackson State.
Louisiana (4-1) went 4-0 on the day in singles matches, and won nine of ten singles matches in straight sets.
"I thought we played our best match of the year so far today against Lamar," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "Lamar is much improved this year and made us earn everything we got. I thought our guys competed really well and came out really strong in doubles."
The squad opened the day with a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals (2-2). The Cajuns jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. The duo of Damian Fainola and Edgar Lopez clinched the point defeating Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Mikko Rajamaki, 6-4.
The Cajuns went on to claim singles victories on courts two, six and five to clinch the match. Junior Jarred Wynan notched a 6-1, 6-4 win over Rajamaki at the No.5 position to secure the victory for the Ragin' Cajuns.
"We did well to keep from getting distracted in the second match with the women playing at the same time and not having all of the singles matches on the court at the same time," Jeffrey added.
In the second match of the day, Farinola and Lopez again clinched the doubles point for Louisiana winning 6-1 on court two against Hernan Geria and Carlos Martinez of Jackson State.
The Ragin' Cajuns won five straight singles matches in the afternoon contest before rain cut things short. Senior Carl Alberton clinched the match on court two defeating Ryan Swanier in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
"Overall I am very pleased with the results from today," Jeffrey mentioned. "This is huge for us headed into a big match at Baylor next week. At this point we have a good number of dual matches under our belt, and I think that will have us prepared to do well on the road next weekend."
Louisiana returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. when the team heads to Waco, Texas to face No.7 Baylor.
