LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team saw their season-high four-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night with a 65-53 loss to Texas State. The Cajuns fell to 8-5 on the season and 1-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Sylvana Okde led the charge for the Cajuns for the second-straight game, scoring 15 points and hitting a season-high five 3-pointers. She finished the game 5-for-7 from behind the arc, also a season-high.
"We didn't pressure the ball like we should at times, and that led them to go on some runs," head coach Garry Brodhead said. "It wasn't about the offense even though we didn't shoot free throws very well. We held our own in the first half but the second half we didn't take charges and left our game plan."
The difference in the game came down to the free throw line, with the Bobcats benefiting from going 16-for-25, compared to the Cajuns' 4-for-12.
"We fouled them because we weren't in position like we should have been," Brodhead said. "We didn't shoot well either. Four-for-12 is not acceptable and they got to the line a lot more than we did."
Texas State jumped out to an early lead before two clutch 3-pointers's from Okde gave the Cajuns a 12-6 advantage leading into the initial media timeout.
The Bobcats used the break to their advantage, sprinting back into the lead with a 20-3 run over a 10-minute span and a 26-15 lead.
After being held to just a free-throw in a 6-minute stretch, the Cajuns came out firing, outscoring Texas State, 12-3, in the final four minutes, going into the locker room down, 29-27 at the break.
Okde lead both teams at the half with 12 points, shooting 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Fellow sophomore Brooklyn Arceneaux was second among scorers with eight of her own.
Okde continued to shoot well from behind the arc in the second half, hitting a 3-pointer to give the Cajuns a 35-34 lead, which was followed by a layup by Keke Veal to make it 37-34, with 15:35 left in the game.
The Bobcats used another run to retake the lead, using a 14-0 run in just under five minutes to take a 48-37 lead. That lead would stand for the remainder of the game, with Texas State hitting 11-for-17 (.647) from the field, down the stretch.
"We are still building," Broadhead said. "I know we have the right system and the right people. We just have to teach them how to fight. When you play small ball you have to fight. It's hard to fight when you are making mistakes, like in the second half."
Despite the loss the Cajuns had three players reach double-digits with Veal following Okde with 13 points and Arceneaux a career-high tying 12 on 5-for-10 aim from the floor.
Sophomore guard Erin Peoples and senior Center Ashley Ezeh led the way for Texas State. Peoples recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Ezeh scored a game-high 16 points with nine rebounds.
The Ragin' Cajuns will stay home to take on Sun Belt Conference newcomer UT Arlington on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. The game, originally slated as a 4 p.m. start time, will follow the Louisiana-UTA men's game that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
