Game Notes
Setting the Scene: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team will look to rebound after seeing its four-game win streak snapped against Texas State earlier this week, when they take on another newcomer to the Sun Belt Conference in UT Arlington. The Cajuns and Mavericks have not faced each other since they were members of the Southland Conference in the 80's. The Cajuns are led by sophomores Keke Veal and Sylvana Okde. The duo averages 11.9 and 11.0 points a game, respectively, and combine for 6.0 rebounds a game. The Cajuns will look to pick up a win against the Mavericks and split their first full week against Sun Belt opponents.
TIME CHANGE: Saturday's game was originally scheduled for 4 p.m., but was moved up an hour to better match up with the finish of the men's game.
About the Opponent: UT Arlington comes to the Sun Belt after spending last season in the Western Athletic Conference, and the previous 43 in the Southland Conference. The Mavericks are 1-13 on the season, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Dec. 21. They are led by seniors Briana Walker and Laila Suleiman. Walker averages a team-high in both points and rebounds with 14.6 and 7.5, and Suleiman averages 10.9 points per game with 2.9 rebounds.
Shades of 2006-07: The Ragin' Cajuns posted a four-game winning streak beginning with a Dec. 14 victory against New Orleans through the Sun Belt Conference opener at ULM on Jan. 4. The win against ULM marked the longest winning streak and first time the Cajuns have won their conference opener since the 2006-07 season. The Cajuns won seven straight games from Jan. 3-25, 2007, all Sun Belt match ups. The Cajuns earned a bid to the NCAA tournament in 2007, falling to Marquette in the opening round.
Century Mark for Okde: Sophomore guard Sylvana Okde hit 74 3-pointers as a freshman in 2012-13 and has hit 31 so far this season, becoming the eighth player in school history to reach 100 career triples. Two players have reached the 200-mark, with Rhonda McCullough (1987-90) holding the school record with 260, and Kim Perrot (1986-90) with 202. Perrot achieved that feat despite the 3-point shot being nonexistent in her first season with the Ragin' Cajuns.
Chairmen of the Offensive Board: The Ragin' Cajuns lead the Sun Belt in offensive rebounds with 16.2 per game, an honor that they came just short of in 2013, finishing second to Middle Tennessee. The Cajuns lead Troy by 0.9 rebounds a game, and are 1.6 rebounds ahead of Arkansas State.
Like She stole Something: Keke Veal averages 3.08 steals per game through the first 13 games, leading both the team and the conference and ranking 16th in the nation. She is second among players playing for schools in Louisiana, behind Chrisstasia Walter of Louisiana Tech, with 3.23 (t-6th). Brittany Boyd of California leads the nation with 3.62 steals a game.
Avoiding the Turnover: The Cajuns have forced the most turnovers per game among all Sun Belt teams and hold a league-high +5.38 turnover margin. That margin is good enough to rank the Cajuns in the top-25 in the nation (21st).
Defending the Three: Louisiana ranks 50th in the nation in opponent 3-point percentage, holding opponents to .276 from 3-point land. The Cajuns currently rank second in the Sun Belt, holding opponents to 37-of-134 from behind the arc, while making 68 triples of their own. UALR leads the conference, holding opponents to .243 from behind the arc.
What's Next? The Ragin' Cajuns will travel to the state of Alabama next week to take on South Alabama on Jan. 15 at 7:05 p.m. and Troy on Jan. 18 at 5:15. It is the first long conference road trip of the season for the Cajuns, who will return home on Jan. 23 to take on Georgia State.
