Garry Brodhead enters his 11th season at the helm of the Louisiana Women’s Basketball program. Brodhead owns a career record of 169-136 and is already the winningest head coach in program history.

Louisiana is coming off an impressive 2021-22 season, coaching the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 18-7 overall record and a 9-4 mark in Sun Belt play which led to a trip to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinals.

Brodhead’s team was effective on both ends of the court, ranking first in the Sun Belt and 13th nationally in field goal percentage (45.5) and first in the league and 19th nationally in field goal percentage defense (35.7).

In her final season with the Ragin’ Cajuns, Ty’Reona Doucet won her second consecutive Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year honor and was named a First Team All-Conference performer after averaging 11.4 points and 8.7 rebounds in 27.3 minutes per contest and 13.0 points and 11.3 boards per contest in league play.

Doucet also finished the year with 44 shots on the year, averaging 1.76 per contest. Her block total was third in the Sun Belt and 84th nationally, while her average was also third in the league and 49th in the nation.

Makayia Hallmon also earned All-League honors, landing on the Third Team leading the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game.

With the pair of All-Conference performers, Brodhead has now had at least two All-Conference players five times in his career.

In what was the program’s 50th season in 2020-21, Brodhead coached the Ragin' Cajuns to their first Sun Belt Regular Season Conference Championship behind a historic 15-game winning streak. Additionally, the squad made its first-ever appearance in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and played in the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Championship Game, its first appearance in the league title game since 2016.

Under Brodhead’s guidance, the team ranked 36th nationally in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 58.0 points per contest.

Doucet was a key catalyst to the team’s success on both sides of the floor during the historic season, earning First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors and becoming the first player in program history to garner Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year honors.

During the season, Doucet became the third player in program history to eclipse 100 career blocks and the 19th player to join the team’s 1,000-Point Club. She finished the year ranked second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.9 points per contest, while leading the team in total rebounds (167) and blocks (36).

Brandi Williams and Skyler Goodwin also earned All-Conference honors, picking up Second Team and Third Team recognition, respectively. During the WNIT, Williams joined Doucet and became the 20th member of the 1,000-Point Club after leading the team in scoring during the 2020-21 campaign.

The 2019-20 campaign saw the team compile a 19-12 overall record and a 10-8 league record en route to earning the No. 4 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and advancing to the semifinals before the season was cut short. During the season, the Cajuns picked up highlight victories at Ole Miss (53-42), the team’s third-ever win over an SEC opponent, and at Troy (79-73), the team’s second-ever win in Troy and the first since 2006.

Louisiana’s most important victory was its final of the season, when it defeated Little Rock, 49-46, to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. The win was the team’s second over the Trojans in Lafayette under Brodhead and its first since 2017.

Doucet had a breakout year, leading the team in total points (366), total rebounds (219) and total blocks (39) to secure Second Team All-Conference honors, the 12th player in program history to be named All-Conference. Williams also built upon her accomplishments from her freshman campaign, averaging 11.7 points per contest and leading the team in both made 3-pointers (41) and free throws (107).

During the 2018-19 season, Louisiana had its first ever freshman named Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, when Williams received the award following the season in which she set two school records, scoring the most points in a season by a freshman (384) and shooting .879 from the free throw line (the best in a single season).  Doucet also had a stellar year, setting a school record with 22 rebounds in a single game, while opening the season with six straight double-doubles en route to a conference high 10 double-doubles on the season.

The 2017-18 season saw the Cajuns complete their fourth-straight winning season, a first in the program's history, and they made their fourth straight appearance in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Championships.  On Jan. 6, 2018, with a 59-55 win over Coastal Carolina, Brodhead won his 100th career game, becoming the first coach in Louisiana women's basketball history to reach the milestone.

Senior Simone Fields, who scored her 1,000th career point during the first month of the season, was named to the 2018 Third-Team All-Sun Belt Conference and garnered 2018 Honorable Mention All-Louisiana Sports Writers Association.  Freshman Skyler Goodwin joined Fields in getting postseason honors, getting named to the 2018 Sun Belt Conference All-Tournament Team.

On Feb. 18, 2017, with a 65-59 win at ULM Brodhead won his 87th career win as the head coach of the Cajuns.  What made that significant was that it placed him solely at the top of the Cajuns all-time wins list in women's basketball history.

During the 2016-17 season, coach Brodhead's team didn't make the trip to the postseason that they're accustomed to, but that didn't stop them from making noise in the Sun Belt.  During the conference tournament, seeded fourth, the Cajuns made a run for the ages.  Starting off with a 79-72 win against ULM, the Cajun ripped off three straight wins to make it to the final game.  During the stretch, along with ULM, the Cajuns took down Texas State (66-64) and Little Rock (79-71).  Although they fell to Troy (78-64) in the final game, the Cajuns had put quite the exclamation point to the end of their season and something to hang their hats on heading into the offseason.

The postseason awards saw that Cajuns senior Jaylyn Gordon and junior Simone Fields were honored for their solid seasons during conference play.  Gordon, who lead the conference in scoring (18.1 ppg), three-point field goals made per game (2.7)  and minutes played per game (38.4), was named First-Team All-Conference.  While Fields, who finished sixth in the conference in scoring (14.7), third in field goal percentage (.548), tied for sixth in rebounds per game (7.0) and third in offensive rebounds per game (3.7) was tabbed on the Second-Team All-Conference.

The 2015-16 season saw Brodhead lead the Cajuns to the best season they had in his tenure at Louisiana, winning 25 games and claiming a second-straight Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) Tournament Championship.  During that season Louisiana snagged two big non-conference wins over SEC schools, beating Ole Miss (82-78) and Arkansas (67-59).  Louisiana opened up their 2016 SBC schedule winning six out of their first seven on their way to a 13-7 finish in the SBC.

In the 2014-15 season, Brodhead guided the Cajuns winning 23 games and claiming the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) Tournament Championship. At season’s end the Cajuns had three players named to the All-Louisiana Women’s Basketball Team (Keke Veal, Kia Wilridge, Jaylyn Gordon). Veal and Wilridge also garnered All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team honors.

During the 2013-14 season, Brodhead helped the Ragin’ Cajuns to a 14-16 record, their best record since the 2006-07 season, with 11 underclassmen on the 12-member roster.

Sophomore Sylvana Okde proved to be one of the offensive leaders for Louisiana for the second-straight season, leading the squad with 10.9 ppg. Brooklyn Arceneaux also had a successful sophomore campaign for Louisiana, averaging 10.5 ppg and 5.2 rpg, to be named to the All-Sun Belt Third Team. Louisiana won four of its final six games of the 2014 regular season to earn the No. 7 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Ragin’ Cajuns ended up falling to No. 2 seed Western Kentucky, the eventual tournament champion, in the quarterfinals by a score of 67-61.

Brodhead brought a new style of play to the Cajuns, one that consisted of speed, shooting and pressing, immediately making an impact.  The squad was led offensively in 2012-13 by a pair of freshmen, local talent Keke Veal (St. Thomas More), and Houston native Okde (Westbury Christian). The duo averaged 13.1 and 10.2 points per game, respectively, and combined for over 300 points from behind the arc.

Brodhead was named the 12th head coach in school history on April 2, 2012 and went on to lead the Cajuns to a 10-21 record in his first season.

He spent the previous five seasons as an associate head coach at McNeese, where he helped guide the Cowgirls to a 52-15 record from 2010-2012, and back-to-back Southland Conference champions and NCAA Championship appearances.

Locally, Brodhead is best known for his accomplishments during a 10-year stint as head girls’ basketball coach at Lafayette’s Teurlings Catholic High School.  In his time he won one state title, and compiled a 297-78 record with the Lady Rebels.

Along with the state championship, he led the squad to nine district titles, and advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament six times, finishing as runner-up once and winning the 2002 State Championship. His 2000-01 squad was ranked in the USA Today Top 25, and three times he saw his team ranked No. 1 in the state.

Personally, Brodhead was named district coach of the year in nine of his 10 seasons.  He was also named parish coach of the year three times and Acadiana coach of the year twice.

The Lafayette native graduated from Louisiana in 1980 with a degree in Business Administration. He was also a student-athlete, competing as a pole vaulter on the Ragin’ Cajuns 1976-80 track and field teams.

He returned to Louisiana in 1994 to spend a season as a graduate assistant coach with the women’s basketball team.

Along with college and high school coaching on his resume, Brodhead has spent time as an AAU coach, leading the Acadiana Stars to the national championship tournament multiple times, finishing eighth in 1997 and fifth in 2006.

Brodhead and his late wife, Andrea, have three children (Blair, Ashley and Beau) and three grandchildren (Cellie and Emmie Richard and Brannon Boyd).
