Cajuns Kick Off Outdoor Season Hosting Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field squad opens the outdoor portion of the 2013 season Friday-Saturday, March 15-16 hosting the Louisiana Classics at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
The two-day event begins Friday, March 15 at 3 p.m. with the women's javelin throw followed by the men's javelin throw at 5 p.m. The opening day concludes with the 200 meter run, women at 7 p.m. and men at 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, March 16 is the featured day of the Cajuns' annual home meet. The action starts with field events at 8 a.m., while running events begin at 2 p.m.
Joining Louisiana for the 2013 outdoor opener will be teams from Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern Louisiana, Troy, Mississippi State, Alcorn State, New Orleans, South Alabama, Louisiana Tech, ULM, Jackson State, LSU, Dillard, Loyola–New Orleans, Nicholls State, Xavier-New Orleans and Southern University.
Admission is $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for children aged 12 and under. Current UL students get in free with proof of school I.D. Parking is available on the grass directly across the street from the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
The weekend event is the first action for the Ragin' Cajuns since competing in the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship Feb. 24-25 in Jonesboro, Ark.
Moving to the outdoor venue adds several events including the javelin, hammer throw, discus and a plethora of relays.
Cajuns getting their first look at the javelin this season on the women's side on Friday are Alex Harrell (Fr./Elmhurst, Ill.) and Amber Sharp. (So./Anacoco, La.) and on the men's side is Wes Gonazles (Jr./New Orleans, La.), Cody Nickel (So./Prairieville, La.) and Marc Malespin (Sr./Lafayette, La.).
Hammer throw entries for Louisiana include Precious Lollis (Sr./Abbeville, La.), Jana Jones (So./Hinesville, Ga.) and Diamond Higgins (So./Kennesaw, Ga.) on the women's side and Scottie Williams (So./New Iberia, La.) and Justin Victor (So./DeRidder, La.) on the men's side.
Competing for UL in the discus throw on the women's side are Lollis, Jones and Brandi Frank (So./Opelousas, La.). Men's discus participants for UL include Myles Melancon (Sr./St. Martinville, La.), Kenneth Nassar (Fr./Houston, Texas), Williams and Victor.
