LAFAYETTE – Chase Traffica threw seven innings of two-hit baseball and the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team broke a tie late in the game for the second straight outing in taking a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart University here Friday evening at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.

Traffica posted a career-high eight strikeouts – the most by a Cajuns pitcher this season – and similar to his first start of the season was one missed pitched away from a shutout performance.

The lone mistake Traffica made came on a two-run home run by Matt Charmello in the fifth inning that brought the Pioneers into a 2-2 tie.

Freshman Blake Trahan notched his first career game-winning hit in the seventh inning when he singled down right field line to score Dylan Butler (one-out double) for a 3-2 advantage.

Louisiana (9-2) added an insurance run for reliever Matt Hicks in the eighth inning, scoring on a two-out error by the Pioneers (0-1).

Hicks registered the save, though the Pioneers made it interesting in the ninth as SHU loaded the bases with no outs. A strikeout, force play at home and ground out to Jace Conrad ended the threat.

For the sixth time in six appearances, Hicks collected either a save or a win. He collected his fourth save to go along with two wins.

The Ragin' Cajuns and Pioneers continue their three-game series on Saturday in a 2 p.m. contest at “The Tigue”. A matchup of left-handed starters will feature Louisiana's Cody Boutte (2-0, 6.75 ERA) against SHU's Nick Leiningen.

Butler and Conrad posted multiple-hit games for the Cajuns, each finishing with two hits. Both of Butler's hits went for extra bases as he doubled twice.

Five of the Cajuns' eight hits went for extra bases as Chase Compton and Conrad doubled and Tyler Girouard tripled in addition to the two doubles by Butler.

Traffica and SHU starter Troy Scribner each tossed two hitless innings to begin the contest. The Cajuns broke the tie in the third inning when Conrad led off with a double down the right field line, moved to third on a Trahan grounder and scored on a Dex Kjerstad sacrifice fly.

UL added another single run off of Scribner in the fourth inning as back-to-back doubles from Compton and Butler resulted in a run increasing the lead to 2-0.

Charmello's two-run home run was the Pioneers' first hit of the game. Traffica, who retired 11 straight SHU hitters entering the fifth inning, issued a leadoff walk to Derick Horn to begin the fifth inning.

Butler's second double of the night came with one out in the seventh inning and set the stage for Trahan's heroics. With two outs, Trahan took a 1-2 offering from Robbie Maguire down the right field line to score Butler.

A rare error by Conrad gave the Pioneers the lead runner in the ninth inning. A John Murphy double and Dan Perez walk loaded the bases. The start to the visitors' half of the final frame was a stark contrast to the nine-pitch effort Hicks needed to retire the Pioneers in order in the eighth inning.

Hicks struck out Horn swinging, then Charmello was jammed by a Hicks offering resulting in a shallow pop up that landed in front of Conrad who tossed home to force out pinch runner Jayson Sullivan. Hicks then induced a grounder to Conrad for the final out.
