JACKSON, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team defeated Jackson State, 81-64, on Monday in a nonconference game at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center. The win was the first on the road in 2013-14 for Louisiana, which improved to 3-2 overall.

The Cajuns were led by sophomore guard Keke Veal, who scored a season-high 18 points, and freshman Braile Fields, who scored all of her career-high 13 points in the first half.

"I thought that we played better defensively as a team tonight," head coach Garry Brodhead said after the game.  "The fouls were a bit too much in the full-court, getting us in trouble in the first half."

The game got off to a slow start with both teams missing early shots and accumulating early fouls, with Louisiana entering the bonus in less than seven minutes of basketball.

After shooting 2-for-6 in the first five minutes of the game with a 7-4 lead, the Cajuns found their stride, hitting six of their next nine attempts to take a 23-9 lead.

The Cajuns kept their foot on the gas offensively, scoring a season-high 48 points in the opening.  Fields led all scorers through the first 20 minutes, hitting 3-of-4 from 3-point land and 4-of-6 overall.

Louisiana continued its strong shooting in the second half, despite heavy defensive pressure from Jackson State. Veal scored six quick points for Louisiana, to add to the lead and make it 57-36 by the first media timeout.

The Cajuns added to their lead right after with another triple, to take a 24-point lead, their largest of the contest.

Louisiana got into foul trouble midway through the second half.  Veal picked up her fourth foul of the game and putting Jackson State in the bonus.

Jackson State took advantage of the Cajuns leading scorers on the bench, going on a 10-2 run over a four-minute span.  The Tigers took advantage of four Louisiana turnovers in that time, scoring four points, and cutting the Cajuns' lead to 66-55.

"They went through a good run there in the second half with our guards in foul trouble," Brodhead added.  "They took advantage of [Veal] and [Gordon] on the bench but we were able to withstand it to finish the game off."

Veal re-entered the game and added to her team lead, scoring three more points to set her season-high in 26 minutes and eclipsing her previous high (17 points), that was set against Sam Houston State.

Fields scored all 13 of her points in just four minutes in the first half. She finished the game with eight minutes on the floor, after picking up three fouls early in the second half.

"That's what she can do, is shoot," Brodhead said of the freshman.  "We've been waiting on it a bit and tonight she was a bit more focused and ready.  She hit some big shots there at the beginning.  That is what we expect from her is to hit shots."

The Cajuns came into the game the best turnover margin in the conference and 13th-best margin in the nation at +8.0, and added to it, winning the turnover battle by one turnover.

They took advantage of the Tigers' miscues, scoring 30 points off 28 JSU turnovers.

"We were concerned about turning the ball over, especially when our point guards went out," Brodhead said of the late JSU run.  "That's when it almost got away there for us.  I was surprised they didn't press us earlier, we struggled when they did."

The Cajuns shot just 22-for-42 on the line in the game, their lowest percentage (52.4) of the season.

"We have to do a better job shooting free throws," Brodhead mentioned.  "We outrebounded them by 10 though, which was good.  It helped us finish off defensively, especially with getting seven or eight charges."

The win marked the first Louisiana regular-season win on the road since Nov. 9, 2012, when the Cajuns defeated Southern, 71-69.  Louisiana defeated North Texas on March, 8, 2013, in double overtime at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, and Tulane in New Orleans in single overtime on Dec. 19, 2012.

The Cajuns will return home for a nonconference matinee against Xavier of New Orleans on Dec. 1 at the Cajundome, with tip scheduled for 2 p.m.  The game will be the final contest at home for the Cajuns game before resuming home action on Dec. 29 against Southeastern Louisiana in a 5 p.m. contest.
