WACO, Texas – The 71st ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team was well represented this past weekend at the HEB Intercollegiate as sophomore Jarred Wynan claimed the consolation singles championship.
“Jarred really changed his game to cut down his errors, and in doing so beat three quality opponents,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “This was a first flight tournament that had a lot of good athletes and Jarred was able to thrive. Jarred had a really good summer, and since then has worked hard to continue his progress. He is committed to the full-time program and it has paid off for him.”
After dropping a hard fought three-set match to Southern Miss' Andrew Goodwin in the main draw, Wynan recovered with a strong 6-2, 6-3 win over Stefan Williams of UT-Arlington in the first round of the consolation draw.
Wynan then went on to defeat Marius Cirstea of Idaho, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, and Carlos Arbiza of UT-Arlington 7-5, 6-1 to claim the consolation title.
“I felt that it was great weekend,” Wynan said. “We've been training hard the past couple of weeks and I had been looking forward to getting out on the court to compete. I was a bit disappointed that I dropped the first match after playing for three hours, but I was able to bounce back from it and string together some wins.”
Wynan, who won 12 matches last spring - which included a streak of eight straight wins, dropped just one set in his three consolation matches.
“Coach Mark Jeffrey really helped me,” Wynan added. “He and the other guys on the team got behind me and it was really good to have those guys supporting me. This win shows what I can accomplish when I work hard in practice. Also, coming home with a trophy in the first weekend has given the guys on the team some confidence as well as myself.”
The Cajuns also saw five newcomers make their first appearance on the court this past weekend highlighted by freshman Hunter Johnson who won his first match in the main draw against UTSA's Kolby Kilgo, 6-0, 6-2.
Johnson then held his own against the No.4 seed in the tournament from Baylor Julian Lenz, 6-3, 6-2.
“Our newcomers came out and played very intense and engaged,” Jeffrey said. “I like how they are always looking for a way to get better. Every one of those guys came and competed hard and I think the depth of our team is already showing.”
Hunter Goertz also notched a win in his first action for UL coming from behind to defeat UTSA's Diogo Casa in three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 10-8.
Louisiana returns to action on Oct. 5-7 when the squad heads to the Lamar Invitational.
