LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field teams will split time between Hammond and Baton Rouge this weekend as the squads take part in meets hosted by Southeastern Louisiana and LSU.
On Friday, April 20, the Cajuns take part in the first-ever Southeastern Lion Invitational at the new Southeastern Track Complex in Hammond. Events begin at 12:30 p.m. with the men's javelin. Following the women's shot put, opening ceremonies will be held at 1 p.m.
Joining the Cajuns in Hammond will be host-SLU, Lamar, Loyola (N.O.), McNeese State, Northwestern State, Southern and Tulane.
On Saturday, April 21 a contingent of UL athletes will compete in the LSU Alumni Gold meet at Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge.
LSU has instituted qualifying standards for its annual Alumni Gold competition, with athletes from teams throughout the South and some from the Midwest expected to compete along with many Olympic hopefuls on Saturday.
After taking a break from action Easter weekend, the Ragin' Cajuns returned to action last weekend, competing in the Mississippi Open hosted by Ole Miss in Oxford.
Key highlights on the women's side were Alexis Malone finishing 4th in the 100 meter dash (11.92), Kacey Elphage running the 100 meter hurdles under 14 seconds for the fourth time in the outdoor season (13.93) and Mayme Cook placing second in the javelin throw (43.27m). For the UL men, Zach France turned in a second-place finish in the 5,000 meter run, O'Daylon Thibeaux claimed third place honors in the triple jump (15.22m) and Casey Comeaux registered one of only three marks of 60-plus meters in the javelin throw (61.06m).
Topping the Sun Belt Conference performance list for the 2012 outdoor season are: Chris Roy in men's pole vault (5.40m/17-8 1/2 at Texas Relays), Devin Davis in men's long jump (7.40m/24-3 1/2 at Mississippi Open), Jasmine Manuel in women's triple jump (13.29m/43-7 1/4 at Texas Relays) and Albert Fournette in men's shot put (19.39m/63-7 1/2 at Texas Relays). Freshman Mayme Cook is second on the SBC performance list in women's javelin (46.58m/152-10).
The outdoor campaign is quickly coming to a close for head coach Lon Badeaux and his troops. The Cajuns wrap up the regular season on Saturday, April 28 hosting the Cole-Lancon Invitational at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
