Men’s Tennis Gears Up For SBC Tennis Championships

LAFAYETTE, La. - With the 2012 regular season in the books, the 70th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team is slated to head to the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton, Texas for the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships.

“We are looking forward to the challenge of competing for a conference championship,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “We are going to take it one match at a time. We have to come out and have a strong showing against Troy in our first match.”

The third seeded Cajuns will face sixth seeded Troy in the first round at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. The winner of the contest will move on to face the winner of the Middle Tennessee/Western Kentucky match.

The SBC Tennis Championships runs from April 19-21 with the championship match set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.

UL carries a 14-7 record into the tournament after splitting a pair of dual matches over the weekend. The Cajuns have faced only one Sun Belt opponent this spring defeating South Alabama 4-1 back on March 2 at the HEB Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas.

All six Louisiana starters in singles have posted double digit wins on the season. Damian Farinola, Ted Nilsson and Jarred Wynan lead the team with 12 wins.

Senior Yanick Mandl has been on fire lately going 7-1 in his last 10 matches, while senior Carlin Murray is on a four-match win streak heading into the championships.

The Cajuns have won three Sun Belt Conference championships with the last one coming in 2006 when UL edged out Middle Tennessee 4-3 in the final.
