70th Ranked Cajuns Down Troy to Advance at SBC Championships

DENTON, Texas – The 70^th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team defeated sixth seeded Troy 4-1 on Thursday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Tennis Championships at the Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton, Texas.

The Cajuns (15-7) will face Middle Tennessee in the conference semifinals tomorrow at 3 p.m. The Blue Raiders defeated Western Kentucky 4-0 to advance to the match.

“We are taking things one match at a time,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “We look forward to our next match against Middle Tennessee tomorrow. Having coach Harkins here with us has been a big help, and the team responded well today. We just need to get after it again tomorrow.”

Brandon Farine and Yanick Mandl quickly topped Troy's Tommy Cundy and Ture Skinner 8-2 on court two in doubles.

Damian Farinola and Jarred Wynan clinched the Cajuns first point at No.3 doubles defeating Patrick Eichler and Anas Rouchdi 8-4.

Louisiana got out to a 3-0 advantage after Rick DeGroot and Ted Nilsson picked up wins in singles play.

DeGroot won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, against Rouchdi on court one, while Nilsson had a strong showing at No.4 singles defeating Eichler 6-1, 6-3.

After the Trojans picked up a point on court five, Mandl clinched the match for the Ragin' Cajuns on court three with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jamie Eccleton.
