LAFAYETTE – For the first time as head coach of the Ragin' Cajuns Track and Field program, UL alumnus and New Iberia native Lon Badeaux gets the chance to showcase his squad at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility as the annual Louisiana Classics track meet is held Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17.
Louisiana will be joined by Colgate, Louisiana Tech, Loyola-New Orleans, LSU, McNeese State, Mississippi State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern, Troy, UL Monroe and Xavier (New Orleans).
The meet kicks off on Thursday with the start of the multi events. The women's heptathlon begins at 1 p.m., while the men's decathlon follows 15 minutes later.
Friday's action starts with the completion of the multi events at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men's and women's hammer throw at 11 a.m. The day wraps up with the 10,000 meter run getting underway at 8:30 p.m.
The entire meet concludes on Saturday with a full slate of field and running events. The field events get underway at 10 a.m. with the women's discus and men's shot put and conclude at 2 p.m. with the triple jump and men's pole vault. Running events start at 1 p.m. with the women's 3,000-meter steeple chase. The meet wraps up at approximately 6:40 p.m. with the women's and men's 4x400 meter relay.
The Ragin' Cajuns are expected to send out numerous athletes, but indoor All-Americans Albert Fournette, Jasmine Manuel and Chris Roy will be held out of the meet as they condition their bodies to make the transition from the indoor to outdoor season.
"This is our first (outdoor) meet of the year," Badeaux said. "We're still training through a lot of meets. We'll use this to knock off the rust, really. I don't have a lot of expectations for the meet.
"It will be valuable to look at our hurdlers in the 110 hurdles, instead of the (indoors) 55-meter hurdles. We need to see where we're at for events like that. Who knows? A few may even qualify for regionals.
"We're going to point to the first LSU meet, then the Texas Relays after that. This is more of a training time for us."
This weekend's meet is one of two home meets leading to the Sun Belt Conference Championships in May at the Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. On Saturday, April 28, UL is set to host the Cole-Lancon Invitational.
Admission for this weekend's meet is $6 for adults and $4 for children 2-12. Children under two and UL students with a valid school ID will receive free admission.
Meet information and results for this weekend's contest will be available online at RaginCajuns.com.
