STARTING PITCHERS
LHP Jordan Harrison (UL) vs. TBA (ALCORN)
Homestand Wraps Up: The Ragin' Cajuns close out a four-game homestand on Tuesday hosting Alcorn State at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field. Louisiana opened the homestand with a three-game sweep of Towson over the weekend.
Good Streak: The Cajuns ended a three-game slide with a 6-5 win in 11 innings over Towson in the home opener on Friday. Now the squad enters the third week of the season riding a three-game winning streak. The win streak has moved the season record above .500 at 4-3.
On the Horizon: The Ragin' Cajuns will make their second trip to the State of Texas as they head to San Antonio for the UTSA Classic Friday-Sunday, March 2-4. The Ragin' Cajuns will take on Gonzaga on Friday, Kansas on Saturday and UTSA on Sunday at Wolff Stadium, home of the minor league baseball team San Antonio Missions, Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Quick Reset: UL opened the home portion of the schedule with a three-game sweep of Towson over the weekend. The Cajuns claimed the opener after a bases-loaded bunt single by Chase Compton in the 11th inning lifted the squad to a 6-5 win. Jordan Nicholson (6.0 IP) and Derek Howell (3.0 IP) combined to throw a three-hitter as UL rolled 11-1 on Saturday. Dylan Butler cranked a two-run homer in the third for a 5-1 lead, then the Cajuns put the game out of reach scoring three runs on three hits highlighted by a RBI double by Compton in the fifth inning. Austin Robichaux made his first collegiate start on Sunday and worked four innings. UL broke open a 2-1 contest with two-run frames in the fifth and sixth inning. A two-run single by Michael Strentz was the final blow. Chris Griffitt held Towson to one run in five innings to lock up the victory.
Compton Grabs Honor: Chase Compton continued his hot start to the 2012 season by clubbing out 10 base hits over four games for the Ragin' Cajuns last week and on Monday was named Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week. The sophomore first baseman posted four multiple-hit games, carried a batting average above .500 for the entire week and at week's end, finished 10-of-17 (.588).
The Alcorn State Series (UL leads 4-0): The Ragin' Cajuns and Braves have met on the diamond only four times, with Louisiana coming away victorious each time. This is the third straight year both clubs square off. In 2010, the Cajuns and Braves met for a two-game, midweek series at “The Tigue” with UL posting 18-1 and 11-0 victories. In 2011, a four run outburst in the fifth inning helped UL break a tie on the way to a 12-3 triumph. The two schools first met in the Cajuns' 56th game of the 1986 season. UL claimed a 7-1 victory on April 24, 1986 and on that day was under the direction of Gene Shell.
Leader of the Pack: For the season, Chase Compton leads UL with a .538 average, five extra base hits, seven RBI and has struck out only once in 28 plate appearances.
Committee of Arms: Junior college transfer Jordan Harrison will make his first start at the DI level, but is expected to pitch no more than two innings. After that, expect several Cajuns pitchers to see action, including those who haven't toed the rubber yet this season.
Lock Down Staff: Cajuns pitching allowed only seven earned runs over 37.0 innings of work last week (1.70 ERA), lowering the staff ERA to 2.90 which ranks second in the Sun Belt.
Automatic Arm: Sophomore Matt Hicks has made four appearances, logged nine innings and has held the opposition scoreless. Opponents are hitting a meager .200 off Hicks. He pitched the final four innings vs. Towson on Friday, maintaining a 5-all tie until Chase Compton's heroics in the 11th inning.
Holding 'Em On: Senior catcher Chris Sinclair has held the opposition close to the bag. Opponents have only attempted four steals through seven games, and Sinclair has gunned down three of the four potential base stealers.
Robichaux Among Baseball's Elite: UL head coach Tony Robichaux entered the 2012 season in the Top 25 amongst winningest active Division I baseball coaches.
Robe Nearing Another Milestone: Head coach Tony Robichaux needs 25 wins to reach 900 career wins. His career record currently stands at 875-589-1.
