2/24/2012 5:51:00 PM | Track and Field
The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field squads are in Murfreesboro, Tenn., this weekend for the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday and Sunday. The meet is hosted by Middle Tennessee at the Murphy Center.
The two-day meet will begin Saturday at 8 a.m., with various pentathlon events and will continue all day with the distance medley relay wrapping up the day at 9:15 p.m. Sunday's action will kick off at 8 a.m. with heptathlon competitions and is scheduled to conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 5:50 p.m.
The full schedule of events along with other meet information can be viewed at the Sun Belt Championship Central page here.
The Ragin' Cajuns men were picked to finish fourth by the Sun Belt coaches while the Cajuns women were selected to finish eighth.
It's the first trip to the SBC Championships under the direction of first-year head coach Lon Badeaux. In the season's earlier meets, Badeaux's troops collected 15 individual championships.
The field events will lead the Cajuns at the 2012 meet as they are led by Albert Fournette who leads the SBC in the shot put with a toss of 63'5" just one inch off the NCAA auto qualifier mark. Additionally, Chris Roy leads the SBC in the pole vault with a clearance of 17'7.75" and Sander Maes leads the SBC in the high jump with a leap of 6'10.25".
The Cajuns have a pair defending conference indoor champions in Murfreesboro: Myles Melancon (shot put) and Jasmine Manuel (triple jump).
Fournette and Roy are coming off of school-record breaking performances last weekend at the LSU Twilight.
A week after recording a distance of 18.54m/60-10 which broke the previous record of 60-8.5 set by Robert Sippio in 1985, Fournette rewrote the record again with a toss of 19.33m/63-5 at LSU. Roy notched his first vault of 17-plus feet this season, reaching 5.38m/17-7 ¾ to claim the LSU Twilight title. Roy picked up his third first-place finish of the season and broke the school record of 17-7 ¼ that he set in the 2010 SBC Indoor Championships.
