Soccer Drops 2-1 Overtime Match to FAU

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Ragin' Cajun soccer team came up short in its third overtime match of the season, dropping a 2-1 decision to Sun Belt Conference foe FAU on Sunday at the FAU Soccer Stadium.

UL moves to 7-9-1 on the season and 1-5-1 in the Sun Belt, while FAU improves to 5-9-0 and 3-4-0 in league play.

FAU's Ellie Smith scored the game-winning goal from 12-yards out in the 99th minute as she knocked in a one-timer off a cross from the right corner.

The Owls held a 5-0 edge in shots during the overtime period and had the only corner kick opportunity. Florida Atlantic had more scoring opportunities overall, holding a 9-7 advantage on shots on goal.

Florida Atlantic got on the scoreboard first in the 47th minute after Natalia Hernandez finished a shot in the lower left corner of the net. The Cajuns came storming back, scoring a goal of their own less than a minute later as freshman Elizabeth Manuel rebounded a cross and snuck a shot inside the left post.

Offensively, Manuel led the way with four shots, three on target. She also notched her third goal of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Amanda Moorefield made seven saves in net for the Cajuns.

After this weekend's matches, the Cajuns sit in a tie for eighth place in the Sun Belt. UL's three remaining matches against Troy, South Alabama and Louisiana-Monroe will prove to be pivotal in order for the team to keep their Sun Belt Conference tournament aspirations alive.

The Ragin' Cajuns travel to Troy, Ala. for its final road swing on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. before returning home for the squad's final two SBC matches of the season.
