Track Set for Arkansas State Invitational
1/26/2012 10:38:00 PM | Track and Field
The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field teams will compete at a facility familiar to head coach Lon Badeaux this weekend as they both participate in the Arkansas State Invitational being held at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
The event is scheduled for Friday-Saturday, Jan. 27-28. Action begins at the Convocation Center Friday at Noon with the first events in the men's and women's multis.
For Badeaux, it's his first visit to Jonesboro as the Ragin' Cajuns head coach. The New Iberia native – a 1996 UL graduate and indoor All-American – spent the previous 12 seasons at Arkansas State, serving as head coach the last four seasons.
Badeaux brings his Cajuns teams into the Convocation Center with both of them ranked in the Top 10 of this week's South Central Region team rankings. UL has already claimed seven individual titles in his inaugural indoor season at the helm.
Freshman Joshua Sigler has been the top men's performer early in the season. Sigler claimed the long jump titles at McNeese and Middle Tennessee. His leap of 7.36m/24-1 ¾ at McNeese is his season-best and ranks third in the South Central Region.
Jasmine Manuel and Albert Fournette made successful debuts last weekend at the Blue Raiders Invitational. Manuel's first triple jump leap of the 2012 season, which reached 12.70m/41-8, was the top collegiate mark at the meet and currently is the sixth-best mark on the NCAA Indoor Qualifier list.
Fournette, who set a school outdoor record in the shot put and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June, made his 2012 indoor season debut on Saturday at the Murphy Center and turned in a toss of 17.93m/58-10 to win the event and is the Sun Belt Conference leader in the event.
Petrona Layne is coming off a first place finish in Murfreesboro in the 800 meters with a time of 2:18.64. O'Daylon Thibeaux registered his indoor personal best in the triple jump at MT with a leap of 15.38m/50-5 ½, a mark which ranks fifth in the South Central Region.
Men's and women's field events begin at 4 p.m. on Friday with the men's weight throw followed by the women's weight throw and the men's pole vault.
Running events begin at 5:30 p.m. with the men's and women's 3,000 and the distance medley relay.
Saturday begins a full day with a rolling schedule of events with the multis resuming at 9 a.m. and other events beginning at 11 a.m. with the shot put and the 55 meter races.
Live coverage of the meet is being provided by Delta Timing. Results will be posted as events are completed and can be accessed by visiting www.deltatiming.com
