The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track & field teams open the 2012 indoor season at the Cowboy Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Ralph O. Ward Rec-Complex in Lake Charles.
Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Joining the Cajuns on Friday will be teams from McNeese State, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, La.-Monroe and Hinds Junior College.
The McNeese meet marks the first competition for Louisiana under the direction on first-year head coach Lon Badeaux. A 1996 UL alum, Badeaux took over the Cajuns track and field program in June 2011 after a 12-year stint at Arkansas State.
“We are really excited to finally get the season started,” Badeaux said. “We are taking a smaller and younger group to this meet, but it's a great opportunity to see how some of the new athletes compete.”
Headlining the Cajuns list of returners on the men's side is Albert Fournette who advanced to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the shot put.
Fournette broke the school record in the shot put twice last season. The New Orleans native originally broke a 26-year old record with a toss of 57-7 ¾ (17.57m) at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational on April 19. At the NCAA East Preliminaries, Fournette placed 10th out of 46 competitors with a throw of 59-3 (18.07m) at the prelim site in Bloomington, Ind., to qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
Garrett Harkless is the reigning Sun Belt indoor champion in the men's weight throw. Harkless' toss of 18.36m/60-3 was nearly two feet further than runner-up Steven Nobles of South Alabama (17.82m/58-05.75) at last season's SBC Championships.
Top returners on the women's side include Jasmine Manuel the reigning Sun Belt indoor champion in the triple jump. Manuel recorded a distance of 12.77m/41-10 ¾ and came in ahead of Western Kentucky's Antquinita Reed (12.55m/41-2 ¼) at the 2011 SBC championships.
Fans are invited to attend and an admission fee will be charged.
