Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns soccer team faced its first overtime contest of the year Friday night, but came up short, losing at Northwestern State 2-1.
The Cajuns (3-2-0) would get on the board early thanks to a 12th minute strike by senior captain Kelli Jestes. The Fort Collins, Colo. native headed in a Jordan Blevins cross to give UL the early one goal advantage.
The goal be Jestes gives her 19 for her career, two more than teammate Courtney Hofland for the Cajuns all-time lead.
The Cajuns defense would make the lead last the rest of the first half as UL went into the locker room with a 1-0 lead over the Demons.
NSU (2-3-0) would get the equalizer early in the second half though. Ashlee Savona netted the Demons goal in the 50th minute. The 1-1 score would stand throughout the remainder of the second half and the two squads would head to overtime.
Both sides would manage only two shots in the overtime period, but NSU made theirs count. The Demons goalie, Jessica Danku, scored the game winner in the 105th minute with 0.8 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Cajuns had plenty of attacks on the Demons goal throughout the match as they outshot NSU 16-9, including 11-5 in shots on goal.
The Cajuns will return to the pitch on Sunday when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas to take on Stephen F. Austin. UL and the Ladyjacks are set to kick off at 1:00 p.m.
