Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns dropped a tight match to the visiting Troy Trojans Sunday afternoon by a final score of 1-0, giving the Cajuns their first Sun Belt loss of the season.
The Trojans (7-2-1, 2-0-0) netted a late, 85th minute strike off of the leg of Ruth Sutcliffe to down the Cajuns who had opportunities throughout the match to score goals of the their own.
The Cajuns (6-5-0, 1-1-0) outshot Troy 16-7 on the day including 7-4 in the shots on goal category. Neither team had a shot on goal until 3:30 remaining in the first half, but that doesn't mean there weren't chances on both sides. The Cajuns have posted more shots on goal than their opponents in eight of 11 matches thus far in 2010.
Kennedy Richards and Cayla Chatman each recorded three shots, while seven different Cajuns had one shot on goal.
UL senior Chelsea Balestra narrowly missed her third goal of the weekend when she was inches away from connecting on a diving header midway through the first half.
The Trojans also narrowly missed in the first half as Jill Pinder bounced a shot off of the crossbar.
Amanda Moorefield (6-5) was tagged with the loss in goal for the Cajuns and, besides Pinder's shot of the bar, wasn't tested until the second half as Troy had no shots on goal in the first half.
Moorefield made three saves on the day, but lost a battle at the top of the 18 yard box with Sutcliffe in the 85th minute that proved to be the difference.
The Cajuns will continue Sun Belt play next weekend when they travel to Denver on Friday for an 8:00 p.m. kickoff. UL will then make the trip to North Texas for a Sunday match-up at 1:00 p.m.
