The Cajuns used two first half goals and a dominating defensive performance to take a 2-0 decision over previously undefeated Nicholls State Friday night in Lafayette.
The Cajuns (4-3-0) got an 18th minute goal from Kelli Jestes, with an assist from Carleigh Martin to take the early lead. The goal was the fourth of the season for Jestes, a team high, and the 20th of her career, the most ever by a Cajun.
The Cajuns would extend their lead when Cayla Chatman grabbed a loose ball and placed it into the back of net in the 38th minute. The goal gave Chatman scores in two consecutive games for UL.
That was all the scoring the Cajuns needed as the defense smothered the Colonels (4-1-1), only allowing three shots with just one coming on goal. All three shots came in the last ten minutes of the game after UL's starting goalie Amanda Moorefield was pulled for Lauren Berlingo.
Moorefield (4-3) got the win behind the Cajuns stellar defense while Berlingo made the Cajuns lone save of the night.
The shutout marked the Cajuns third of the season, the most since 2007 when UL blanked four opponents.
The Cajuns fired off a total 19 shots on the night with 10 coming on goal. Shelby Isley led UL with four shots, including two on goal. Jestes and Chatman also posted two shots on goal each.
The Cajuns return to the pitch when they travel to Baton Rouge on Sunday to take on Louisiana State. The Cajuns and Tigers are set to kick off at 1:00 p.m.
