BOWLING GREEN, Ky. ? Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the 2008 Sun Belt Conference Cross Country Championships here Saturday morning at Kereiakes Park.

The women's 5K race will get underway at 10 a.m., followed by the men's 8K race starting at 11 a.m.

Louisiana enters the SBC Cross Country Championships with the potential for the program's first all-conference performer on the men's side since 2004 (Justin Lemaire, Jake Simmons, Walter Whitfield) and on the women's side since 2003 (Natalie Gillis).

Alex Breaux is the men's team candidate for all-conference accolades. The redshirt freshman from Houma led the Cajuns men in all races that he finished this season (didn't finish at Auburn). Breaux turned in two Top 10 performances and in his last outing finished in the Top 100 at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival running the 10K in 31:50.97.

“Alex (Breaux) has a really good chance at being all-conference,” said UL cross country coach Tim LeMaire, “If he runs a consistent race he should finish in the Top 10. He's ready to go, is a highly motivated kid.”

Breaux's previous 8K runs this season placed him fourth and eighth with times of 26:34.97 and 25:43.00, respectively.

Paula Parker was the top runner for the UL women this season. She has one championship to her credit, winning the Centenary Invitational 6K with a time of 25:09. In her only 5K meet of the season, Parker clocked in at 20:29.81 at the ULM Warhawk Invitational.

“Paula's workouts have been great and she has the potential to finish under 19 minutes,” LeMaire said. “Whether it happens or not, if she finishes under 19 minutes she has a chance to sneak in and claim all-conference honors. A good consistent finish for her would be Top 20.”

Other men's runners joining Breaux in Bowling Green will be Resse Lee, Joby Gisclair, Stuart Theriot, Jaron Ortego, Marshall Kemp, Geoffrey Goudeau and Jacob Delahoussaye.

“If you look at the men's roster, we're a young team ? mostly freshman and sophomores, we have one senior and one junior,” LeMaire said. “In our last outing before this weekend's meet, we ran well and hopefully that will carry into the meet.”

Other women's runners participating with Parker will be Ashley Faulk, Torri Choate, Jenna Picou, Colby Martin and Adrienne Carriere.

“The women progressed well during the season and they have a chance to finish possibly higher than last year even though we don't have the numbers,” LeMaire said. “I'm pleased with their progress and I'm anxious to see how they perform.”

The Cajuns men were predicted to finish 11th out of 11 teams and the women 10th out of 11 teams, as voted by the league's coaches.
