Freshman Scott Migl (7-3) scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings of work to get the victory for the Aggies. Eight of the nine hits were singles as Migl kept the Cajuns at bay all evening and made big pitches whenever the Cajuns threatened.
A&M (47-17) got all the runs they would need in the first inning when Kyle Colligan homered to left center off Cajuns' starter Brent Solich (5-2) with one out. Brandon Hicks followed with a single and after Blake Stouffer flied to left, Craig Stinson reached on an error by Cajuns third baseman Matt Hicks to put runners at first and second. Luke Anders then followed with a swinging bunt single to score Hicks and give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The Cajuns, frustrated all night by Migl, stranded two Cajun baserunners in the third inning. Migl then retired three in a row in the fourth after Jefferies Tatford doubled to lead off the inning. The Cajuns got back to back singles with two out in the fifth, but Migl got Jonathan Lucroy to ground out to end the threat.
In the seventh, Brian Ruggiano led off with a double for A&M and Colligan sacrificed him to third. Brandon Hicks grounded to second baseman Xavier Alexander with the infield in, and Alexander's throw to the plate resulted in a rundown with Ruggiano tagged out. Hicks reached second on the play and the Cajuns elected to intentionally walk Stauffer, who hit for the cycle earlier in the day against
The Cajuns (45-16) tried to rally with back to back singles by Lucroy and Tatford to lead off the eighth, which ended the night for Migl. Nolan Gisclair greeted reliever Travis Starling with a deep fly to right moving Lucroy to third. Scott Hawkins followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-1. Pinch hitter Justin Robichaux singled up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. But Starling got Devery Van de Keere to ground out and end the Cajuns only real threat.
Solich went all the way for the Cajuns, giving up three earned runs in eight innings for his second straight complete game.
“Brent was our only bright spot tonight,” said Cajuns' assistant coach John Szefc after the game. “He pitched his heart out for us and we did nothing at all to support him offensively.”
