SAN ANTONIO, Texas-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns extended their winning streak
to
four games as they completed the sweep of Texas-San Antonio on Sunday
afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The four-game winning streak to start the season is the best since the
Cajuns
started the 2001 season 6-0.
The Cajuns' bats erupted in the final game of the series. UL collected 15
hits on the day including 10 extra base hits. Louisiana-Lafayette hit a
pair
of homeruns, three triples and five doubles on the day.
Six different Ragin' Cajuns players had multiple hits in the game and five
Cajuns had multiple RBI. Nolan Gisclair led the way with four RBI on a pair
of hits including a homerun.
John Zorich was stellar on the mound in his Cajuns' debut. He tossed 7.0
innings allowing seven hits and surrendering just one run.
The Ragin' Cajuns jumped out on the Roadrunners early in the first inning.
Following a three-pitch strikeout, Xavier Alexander hit an infield single to
get things started for the Cajuns. Jonathan Lucroy followed with a triple
off of the top of the outfield wall ? the fifth triple of his career.
Devery
Van De Keere kept the inning alive doubling off of the right centerfield
wall.
The Cajuns used a piece of luck to keep the first inning alive. A fly ball
to left field recorded the second out of the inning. Van De Keere broke on
the fly ball and the Roadrunners had a chance to double up UL, but the UTSA
second baseman bobbled the throw allowing Van De Keere to return to second
safely. The Ragin' Cajuns made the Roadrunners pay for their mistake with
the next batter. Gisclair dropped a single into left centerfield to plate
Van De Keere and give UL a 3-0 lead after a half of inning of play.
The Roadrunners threatened in the second inning after being retired in order
in the bottom of the first. With one out, Zorich walked the next batter on
four straight pitches. UTSA added a baserunner with a single to
centerfield. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position.
Zorich struckout the next batter and induced a fly ball to end the inning
and
Roadrunner threat.
The Cajuns added some insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Tatford led off the inning with a solo homerun over the right field wall.
William Long walked and moved to third base on a bloop single by Matt
Casbon. Casbon advanced on a wild pitch, but the throw to second base was
off the mark allowing Casbon to move to third and Long to score. Josh Logan
collected his first extra base hit of the season as he tripled to right
centerfield scoring Casbon. Devon Bourque hit a fly ball deep centerfield
to
allow Logan to score on the sacrifice fly. A groundout ended the inning,
but
the damage had been done and the Cajuns led 7-0 at the end of the top of the
fourth inning.
In the top half of inning number six, the Cajuns added a run. Gisclair hit
a
solo homerun over the left centerfield wall, his first in as a Ragin' Cajuns
player.
In the seventh inning, the Cajuns extended their lead. Alexander led off
the
inning with a walk and stole second to give UL a runner in scoring position.
Lucroy doubled to right center to plate Alexander. Van De Keere followed
Lucroy with an RBI double of his own. Tatford hit the third consecutive
extra base hit in the inning as he tripled over the head of the Roadrunner
left fielder. An RBI groundout scored the fourth run of the inning for the
Cajuns. Long was hit by a pitch to continue the inning and moved to third
on
a Casbon double. Logan singled to short to score the final run of the
inning
and give the Cajuns a 13-0 lead.
UTSA scratched the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two
outs, the Roadrunners strung together three consecutive singles to score a
run and break up the shutout.
The Cajuns added a run in the top of the eighth inning. Blaine LaFleur led
off the inning with a single to left field. A Tatford walk moved LaFleur to
second and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Gisclair hit a sacrifice fly
to score the runner and give the Cajuns a 13-run lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The Cajuns
will head to Hammond, La. to take on Southeastern Louisiana. First pitch is
