HAMMOND, La.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team improved to 5-0 on the season as they claimed a 5-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.
The Cajuns are off to their best start since they started 6-0 in 2001.
Starting pitcher Buddy Glass earned his second victory of the season. Glass worked 6.0 innings, allowing just one run. The junior hurler scattered six hits while fanning four batters and working out of several bases loaded jams.
Danny Farquhar was stellar in relief of Glass. The sophomore fanned five batters in 3.0 innings as he earned his second save of this season. He walked no batters and faced just one batter over the minimum.
Offensively for the Cajuns, three players contributed multiple hits on the night. Scott Hawkins, Jefferies Tatford and Kolin Hatfield each contributed a pair of hits in the win.
Hatfield added an RBI on the night, but freshman Justin Robichaux broke the game open in the fifth inning. His single scored a pair of runs and helped pad the Cajuns lead.
In the first inning, the Cajuns got a bit of help from the Lions to generate the first run of the game. With one out, Scott Hawkins singled through the left side of the infield. He moved to second on a single by Jonathan Lucroy. A wild pitch moved Hawkins to third and second wild pitch allowed the sophomore to score.
The Lions answered in the bottom of the first inning. A leadoff single gave Southeastern Louisiana their first base runner of the night. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second base and a wild pitch advanced him to third. The runner came around to score on a groundout, knotting the score at 1-1.
The Cajuns threatened in the top of the third inning. Xavier Alexander extended his team leading hitting streak to five games to give UL a base runner. A pair of walks loaded the bases, but the Cajuns were not able to plate a runner and the score remained tied at 1-1.
UL missed another opportunity in the top of the fourth inning. Hatfield led off the inning with double to left centerfield. A passed ball moved him to third base with no outs. The Cajuns' batters were unable to score the run. A line drive to short recorded the first out with a fly ball to shallow centerfield being responsible for the second out of the inning. The Cajuns looked to have the hit they needed to score Hatfield, but a spectacular diving catch by the Lions' right fielder ended the Ragin' Cajuns chances.
In the bottom half of the fourth inning, the Lions threatened. With two outs, Southeastern Louisiana used two singles and a four pitch walk to load the bases. After a visit to the mound by head coach Tony Robichaux, Glass ended the threat with a four-pitch strikeout.
In the Cajuns half of the fifth inning, UL scored four runs to take the lead. Hawkins led off with a walk to start the inning. With two outs, Tatford singled through the left side of the infield giving the Cajuns a pair of base runners. A passed ball moved Hawkins and Tatford to third and second respectively. Nolan Gisclair drew a walk to load the bases. An infield single to third base by Hatfield scored the first run of the inning for the Cajuns. Another passed ball scored the second run of the inning. Robichaux cleared the bases with a single through the right side to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 5-1 advantage.
Neither team could muster any offense for the next four innings and the Cajuns won the game by the final score of 5-1.
The Ragin' Cajuns baseball team will return to action this weekend as they host Illinois in a three-game non-conference series. Friday's game will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Tigue. Saturday is slated for 2:05 p.m., while Sunday's game is scheduled 10:00 a.m.
