LAFAYETTE ? Louisiana 's 15th ranked Ragin' Cajuns picked up wins 33 and 34 as they swept the visiting Northwestern State Demons in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Lamson Park . The Cajuns defeated NSU 6-2 in a come from behind win in the first game and then turned around in the nightcap and came from behind once again in an 12-4 five inning, run rule victory. With doubleheader sweep UL improves to 34-7 overall and the Demons drop to 17-19.
The Cajuns are currently on a six game win streak and have won 13 of their last 14 games.
Louisiana scored two runs in their half of the fourth and added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 6-2 come from behind win in game one. NSU led 2-0 after their half of the second with two solo home runs. Amanda Jameson and Kelly Corliss had the solo shots for the Demons.
Cajun starter Brittany Cuevas retired 15 of the last 16 Demon hitters she faced following the second home run in the top half of the second inning. Cuevas earned her 21st win of the season, against four losses, tossing a complete game two hitter. Cuevas' 21 wins is the most by a Cajun freshman pitcher since Brooke Mitchell won 20 games in her freshman season in 2002. Kirsten Lendley dropped to 1-4 on the season for the Demons after pitching the complete game and giving up 11 hits to UL hitters.
The Demons took an early lead in game one as they would score two runs in the top half of the second inning on solo homeruns from Amanda Jameson and Kelly Corliss.
Louisiana 's Lacey Bertucci cut the NSU lead in half with a solo home run to lead off the bottom half of the fourth, her ninth round tripper of the season. The Cajuns added another run in their half of the fourth to tie the game at two. Desi Chatman and Codi Runyan both singled and pinch hitter Megan Godwin walked to load the bases. Vallie Gaspard's RBI single to shortstop scored Chatman and the scored was tied at two at the end of the fourth.
UL added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead at the end of five. Holly Tankersley led off taking the first offering from NSU starter Kristen Lindley up the middle for a single. Bertucci followed with a walk and Chatman reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Codi Runyan doubled down the left field line scoring Tankersley and pinch runner Courtney Trahan, giving the Cajuns a 4-2 lead. A Lana Bowers sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Shari Sigur making the score 5-2, and Runyan later scored on an NSU error to make the score 6-2 going into the top of the sixth inning.
Again in game two NSU took the lead in the top half of the second inning. Michelle Castellano took Cajun starter, Shari Sigur's first pitch of the inning over the right centerfield fence for a 1-0 Demon lead.
UL answered with three runs in the bottom of the second with the benefit of only one hit. Gaspard singled to third with one out and NSU starter Castellano walked three Cajun hitters and hit one to give Louisiana the 3-1 lead at the end of two.
Northwestern State wasted little time as they posted three runs in the top of the third inning to re-take the lead at 4-3. Demon designated player, Amanda Glenn, homered to left field with two runners on.
The Demons threatened in the top of the fourth placing runners at second and third with one out, but Tankersley who came on in relief of Sigur to start the fourth, forced NSU's Lyndsey Gorski to ground out to second and then struck out Margaratterson to end the inning.
The fireworks continued in the bottom half of the fourth for the Cajuns as Tankersley and Bertucci each walked and Chatman followed with a shot over the World Series board in centerfield and UL re-captured the lead at 6-4.
UL added six more runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the in five, leading 12-4. Gaspard led off the inning being hit by a pitch and Karli Hubbard reached on a bunt single. Runyan added an RBI single in the inning and Megan Godwin entered to pinch hit and delivered a single scoring two runs. Tara Hamilton sacrifice bunt scored Runyan from third and the Cajuns sealed the run rule win.
Tankersley came on in relief of Cajun starter Shari Sigur and pitched the final two innings for the win, improving her season record to 11-3. NSU's Michelle Castellano was tagged with the loss in game two and falls to 7-7.
The Cajuns will have the weekend off before traveling to Lake Charles to take on McNeese State next Tuesday in a single non-conference game.
