LAKE CHARLES - The 15th ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns went on the road on Tuesday night and suffered a heartbreaking 10 inning, 6-5 loss, to non-conference opponent McNeese State in Lake Charles.  UL drops to 34-8 overall with the loss, and the Cowgirls improve to 15-24.  UL takes the season series three games to one.

After the Cajuns failed to score in the top half of the first inning, McNeese took an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first.  Brooke Brodhead led off with a double to left field and later scored on a Cajun error.

Louisiana wasted little time as they tied the score at one in the top of the second inning as Codi Runyan led off with a single to right field.  Lana Bowers reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Vallie Gaspard infield single and a McNeese error.

The Cajun bats came to life in the top half of the third inning as Louisiana pushed across three runs to take a 4-1 lead.  Melissa Verde led off with a base on balls, Holly Tankersley singled and Lacey Bertucci singled down the left field line to load the bases.  Desi Chatman's sacrifice fly scored Verde, and Runyan singled up the middle to score Tankersley.  Lana Bowers' ground out to second scored pinch runner Courtney Trahan and UL led 4-1.

McNeese cut the UL lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third on RBI singles from Jenny Clay and Rachael Phillips.

After both teams went scoreless in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Louisiana came up with a single run in the top of the seventh inning on a big RBI single to left field from Runyan.  Runyan's seventh inning single was her third hit of the game. Tankersley had led off the inning with a double and pinch runner Shari Sigur scored on the Runyan single.

With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the seventh inning, Megan Beard and Jenny Clay both singled for the Cowgirls, and both scored on an error by Cajun left fielder Vallie Gaspard, to tie the score at five, at the end of seven innings of play.

The Cajuns placed runners at second and third with one out in the top of the eighth inning on Karli Hubbard and Melissa Verde singles, but Cowgirl relief pitcher Cori Bram came on in relief of starter Jena Jones and retired Tankersley and Bertucci  to end the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, for McNeese, Clay led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored the winning run on a Phillips fielder's choice.

Bram, who relieved Jones, with one out in the eighth inning, was the winning pitcher and improves to 4-10.  Brittany Cuevas was the hard luck loser for the Cajuns and drops to 21-5.

The Cajuns 13 hit attack was led by Tankersley and Runyan with three hits each.  Bowers and Hubbard both added two hits.

Louisiana will now be home on Friday and Saturday as they entertain Florida International in Sun Belt Conference action.  Action begins on both days at 1 PM, with a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Sunday.
