Turnovers Cost Cajuns at Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 on the road as they lost a 86-60 decision to the Ole Miss Rebels at the C.M. “Tad” Smith Coliseum.

A costly first half spelled the demise of the Cajuns.  Eight-of-31 shooting in the first half, including a 0-for-10 performance from behind the arc, combined with 15 first half turnovers led to a 25-point half time deficit from which the Ragin' Cajuns could not recover.

Onna Charles (New Iberia, La.) led all Cajuns with 12 points.  She was followed by Sonora Edwards (Snook, Texas), Jasmine Barnes (Baton Rouge, La.) and Lyndra Bell (Lafayette, La.) who netted nine, eight and eight, respectively.

Charles, like the Cajuns, did most of her damage in the second half.  After scoring just two points in the first stanza, Charles rattled off 10 points in the second half.

Kina Miller (Aurora, Ill.) led all Cajuns on the boards, pulling down five rebounds.

Ole Miss had three players score in double-digits led by Shawn Goff who had a game-high 23.

It was all Rebels in the early going.  Ole Miss capitalized on five turnovers by the Cajuns in the first four minutes of the game and quickly built a 13-2 lead.  The Cajuns were down 7-0 before Onna Charles broke UL's scoreless drought.

Trailing by 11 with 15-minutes to play in the first half, Edwards cut the lead to single digits, but turnovers cost the Cajuns yet again.

A series of turnovers and missed shots allowed Ole Miss to build their lead up to 21-4 with 11:42 remaining in the half.

Jasmine Barnes broke the Ragin' Cajuns 4:10 scoring drought with a lay-up, but the Rebels responded eight straight points to extend their advantage to 29-6 with fewer than eight minutes to play in the first half.

The Cajuns fell behind by as many as 26 points in the first half and headed into the locker room on the wrong end of a 42-17 halftime score.

UL improved in the second half, but the deficit was just too much to overcome.  The Cajuns shot nearly 60-percent in the second half, including 33-percent from behind the arc.

The Cajuns made nine baskets in the first 10 minutes of the second half, compared to just eight in the entire first half.

Trailing 63-34, the Cajuns went on a 6-0 run to trim the lead.  During the run, Edwards made a jumper under the basket; Miller drained a pair of free throws; and D'Mya Clay (Columbus, Ohio) converted a fast-break lay-up.

The run was short lived as Goff rattled off eight straight points to extend the UM lead to 31 points.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 21 as they head to Baton Rouge to take on No. 4 Louisiana State.  Tip-off with the Tigers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
