LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns continued their dominance at “The Tigue” with a 4-0 win over Northwestern State on Saturday night. With the win, UL improves 28-17, 23-4 at home, while the Demons drop to 25-18.
It appeared to be a long night for Cajuns starter Kevin Ardoin (5-2) after loading the bases with one out in the first inning. Ardoin retired the next two hitters and then the bottom of the NSU line-up in order in the second.
The Cajuns scored a quick run in the bottom of the first. Justin Merendino looped a single down the right field line and promptly swiped second. Brad Saloom reached on a fielder's choice that canceled Merendino at third, before Rhett Buras was hit by a pitch. Josh Landry earned his 26th run-batted-in of the season with a single into left-center.
Ryan Core helped Ardoin in the third and fourth inning by throwing out a Demon attempting to steal second base in each inning.
The Cajuns increased their edge with two gone in the bottom of the fifth.
Devon Bourque reached base on a fielder's choice, Merendino was hit by a pitch and Saloom walked to load the bases. Rhett Buras cleared the bases with a double to the gap in right-center, giving the Cajuns a 4-0 lead.
The Demons had their best scoring opportunity after a pair of one-out singles in the top of the sixth. A fielder's choice put NSU runners at first and third with two gone in the inning. John Coker made a difficult running catch look easy in left-center to help the Cajuns end the inning unscathed.
Landry nearly extended the Cajuns lead in the bottom of the seventh. Second baseman Brandon Morgan made a fantastic stab at Landry's grounder to made the play at first base.
