Cajuns Pound Out 14-2 Win Over Trojans

LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team defeats the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans by a score of 14-2 here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field in game one of the three game Sun Belt series. UL Lafayette (13-23) improves to 5-5 in conference play, while Arkansas-Little Rock (19-13) falls to 2-5 in the Sun Belt.
Louisiana-Lafayette sophomore right-hander Kevin Ardoin made the start against Trojan right-hander Brad Cherry. Ardoin held the Trojans to just one run on five hits in eight innings pitched. The win is Ardoin's second in a row and improves his record to 2-3 overall on the season.
UL Lafayette scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take an early 3-0 lead. All three runs came after a Trojan infield error with two outs in the inning. Bryan Sneed scored on the ground ball error with two outs off the bat of Kevin Preau. Phillip Hawke and Brad Saloom drew consecutive walks against Cherry, which scored Corey Coles from third base and kept the bases loaded. Dallas Morris drove in the third run of the inning with a single to center field scoring Preau from third before Hawke was thrown out at home trying to extend the lead.
Arkansas-Little Rock added one run in the top of the second inning to cut the Cajun lead to two runs. Chris Julo walked with one-out in the second inning and scored from first on a Cajun outfield error off of J.J. Yant's single to center field.
The Cajuns extended the lead back to three runs at 4-1 in the second inning before blowing the game open with six runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead. The Cajuns batted around in the inning and scored the six runs on four hits. Corey Coles highlighted the inning with a triple to right field that scored three runs. The Cajuns took advantage of two Trojan errors in the inning and scored three more runs for the nine run lead. Dallas Morris and Phillip Hawke both added RBI's in the inning. Trojan starter Brad Cherry left in the fourth inning after allowing ten runs (three earned) on six Cajun hits.
UL Lafayette added four more runs the rest of the way to score a season high 14 runs on the night. Corey Coles had three runs scored on the night to go with a triple in the fourth inning. Dallas Morris extended his hitting streak to nine games after going 2 for 3 on the night with two RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Core (3 for 5) and Kevin Preau (2 for 5) also both had multi-hit performances.
The Trojans added a final run in the ninth inning on a RBI single by Brodie Ward against Cajun reliever Jeff Martinez.
Ardoin (2-3) picks up his second win in a row for UL Lafayette and Brad Cherry (5-3) suffers the loss for Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Cajun offense pounded out a total of 12 hits on the night and has now had ten plus hits for five consecutive games. UL Lafayette is now batting .254 as a team, a 15 point jump in the last four games.
Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 13-23 overall on the season and 5-5 (.500) in the Sun Belt. The series continues tomorrow at 2 p.m. Jordy Templet (3-3, 3.83 ERA) will take the mound for UL Lafayette against UALR left-hander Aaron Carter (2-1, 4.15 ERA).
