Cajuns Drop Road Opener

NATCHITOCHES, La.- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team traveled to Brown Stroud Field for the first road game of the 2003 season and fell behind by a big deficit early in route to a 11-2 loss.
The Northwestern Demons (1-3) had the hot bat to open the game off UL Lafayette starter Dan Reed (0-1). Reed only lasted one third of an inning allowing five runs in his Ragin' Cajuns debut. Bubba Olivier made his season debut in relief of Reed and finished the inning allowing one run. Northwestern State scored six runs on seven hits to take the early 6-0 lead.
Northwestern State picked up another run off Olivier in the second inning and two more in the third as Kraig Schambough came on for Olivier to pitch.
Louisiana-Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the top half of the third inning on a Bryan Sneed RBI single scoring Charles Redmond from second.
Northwestern starter Aaron Gravis (1-1) held the Cajuns to only one run on five hits through the first six innings. Demon pitcher Brian Daly relieved Gravis to open the seventh inning with the Demons leading 9-1.
The Cajuns added their second and final run off Daly in seventh when Cajun shortstop Dallas Morris singled to open the inning and scored on a Phillip Hawke groundout.
The Demons scored two more
runs in the bottom of the seventh off reliever Danny McMurtry. McMurtry was relieved by Ardoin, who pitched the
final inning and a third for UL Lafayette allowing only one
hit.
Gravis picked up the win for the Demons after six solid
innings and Dan Reed suffered the loss for UL Lafayette.
The Demons were led offensively by leadoff hitter Josh Boop who went three for four on the night with two RBI.
Louisiana-Lafayette will next travel to Houston, Texas to take part in the 2003 Astros College Classic Feb. 14-16.
The Cajuns will play the
first of three games against Alabama at 11a.m. this Friday
