Mistakes Hold Back Cajuns In 3-0 Loss to Tulane

UL Lafayette (4-6-1) was able to put pressure on TU goalkeeper Kristin Weegar collecting five shots on goal. Weegar made the save each time, though, as the Cajuns were shutout for the sixth time this season.
Tulane went ahead on an early goal by forward Jessica Mendez at the 10:10 mark of the first half. Mendez dribbled past two Cajun defenders before knocking the ball into the net.
The turning point of the match came in the first half when UL Lafayette was down a goal and Lauren Schwindt broke free with only Weegar left to beat and was tackled by her at the 23:42 mark well outside of the box.
Weegar received a yellow card and the Cajuns missed out on an excellent chance to tie the match.
The Cajun defense held tough and trailed by just one goal heading into halftime.
"Lately we have not been giving ourselves a chance to win matches by going a goal down so early in the match," said UL Lafayette coach Dave Poggi. "It's even more frustrating when the goal is the result of mistakes that we make and not our opponent's superior play."
A pair of quick strikes in the early stages of the second half provided the Green Wave some breathing room.
Jackie Obert scored at the 50:18 mark to put TU up 2-0 just five minutes into the second frame.
Tulane extended their lead to 3-0 off a free kick by midfielder Asia Simons outside the box past UL Lafayette goalkeeper Anna Brannon.
"Like the match on Friday, we showed some fight," Poggi mentioned. "But again five minutes into the second half we gave away a second goal as a result of mistakes.
"I thought we did well at trying to dictate the pace of the match," Poggi added. "However I felt that we struggled at times to keep up with that pace."
The Cajuns will be on the road for the next two matches. Louisiana-Lafayette visits Centenary College Thursday, Oct. 9 for a 7 p.m. match in Shreveport and then wraps up the swing on Sunday, Oct. 12 at Florida International.
