LAFAYETTE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team ended its scoreless drought but was unable to snap its winless streak as South Alabama posted a 3-1 win here Friday night at Cajun Field in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams.

UL Lafayette (4-5-1, 0-1 Sun Belt) drops below the .500 mark for the first time this season and remains winless in conference openers and versus USA in the program's short four-year history.

South Alabama (4-5-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) came out strong in the first half and controlled possession for much of the half to keep the Cajuns defense on its heels.

The Jaguars first goal was a result of an unlucky bounce for UL Lafayette. Meredith Smith was attempting to clear a shot out of the box but the ball took an odd bounce off of her leg and into the goal.

USA kept up the offensive pressure and capitalized at the 35:03 mark to go ahead 2-0 off the boot of forward Karrie Johnson. Johnson's goal was assisted by forward Julia Herman.

UL Lafayette came out rejuvenated in the second half and pressured the Jaguars before cutting the deficit to one goal on a free kick by Melissa Barger in the 70th minute. Barger knocked the ball into the lower corner of the net passed the out stretched hands of South Alabama goalie Amber Angermeier.

Barger's goal was her second of the season and career and the first in school history against South Alabama. UL Lafayette had been shutout in the three previous meetings with USA.

After being shut out in their last three matches the past two weeks, the goal for Louisiana-Lafayette broke a scoreless streak that had lasted for 340:42 since Tiffany Garber's golden goal against UL Monroe on Sept. 14.

The Cajuns were pressuring the Jags for the equalizer but the momentum was stopped when Colleen Henry was forced to sub off the field to remove a piece of jewelry she was wearing. The Cajuns were then forced to play the next three-plus minutes with just 10 players.

Jennifer Beckwith sealed the game for South Alabama on a partial breakaway that rolled past Preseault five minutes later at 78:56.

Louisiana Lafayette will be back in action Sunday in a non-conference match against in-state foe Tulane at Cajun Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
