Cajuns defeat Savannah in Bearcat Invitational

CINCINNATI, OH - Louisiana-Lafayette defeated Savannah State 64-42 in the opening game of the Bearcat Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Cajuns added to their 24-point halftime lead with a 10-1 run at the beginning of the second half, then cruised to victory. Head coach J. Kelley Hall was able to insert eleven players into the line-up
The first five minutes of each half was crucial as UL Lafayette outscored Savannah State 15-2 in the first half and 11-5 in the second frame.
Charlotte Green led the Cajuns with 22 points, playing only 30 minutes. The Lafayette native set aside a 2-for-17 shooting performance at South Carolina to hit 8-of-13, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Anna Petrakova, making her first career start, scored a career-best 16 points and added 10 rebounds to mark her first career double-double. Brooke Williams set a new career mark with 17 rebounds, including seven on the offensive glass. Williams entered the game with a combined five offensive rebounds in her previous seven games. True freshman Ashley Blanche led the Cajuns with five assists.
Green scored the Cajuns first eight points to give UL Lafayette an 8-2 early lead. Williams, Sharee Glenn and Green followed with baskets to extend the Cajuns lead to 15-2 five minutes into the game.
Tiffany Stephens hit the Lady Tigers first field goal with 14 minutes remaining, but Green followed with her fourth three-pointer to put the Cajuns ahead 18-6.
The Cajuns kept running, using spurts of 6-0, 6-2 and 10-2 to close the half up 45-21. Green had 19 points at the half, while Williams grabbed nine rebounds.
UL Lafayette turned the ball over just three times and had 21 rebounds, compared to nine turnovers and 11 rebounds by Savannah State at the half. The Cajuns out rebounded the Lady Tigers 48-24 in the contest.
Sarah Richey did not play due to illness and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game. The Cajuns will play on Sunday afternoon against the winner of Saturday's late game between Cincinnati and Bowling Green.
