Cajuns fall to Cincinnati in Bearcat Invitational

CINCINNATI, OH - Louisiana-Lafayette gave the University of Cincinnati a scare on Sunday afternoon, but fell in the championship game of the Bearcat Invitational 68-55 to the host Bearcats.
Anna Petrakova scored eight straight points to preserve the Cajuns second half lead at 50-49 until K.B. Sharp hit a three-pointer a to give the Bearcats a two-point edge.
Charlotte Green then hit a long jumper to tie the score at 52-52 with five minutes remaining in the game.
Petrakova fouled out with less than four minutes remaining and the momentum immediately went to Cincinnati. The Bearcats went on a 12-0 run over the final four minutes to seal the game for UC.
Green led the Cajuns with 21 points on 9-for-12 shooting. She finished the tournament with 43 points on 17-of-25 shooting and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Petrakova recorded her second straight double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She finished the tournament with 32 points, on 13-of-25 shooting, and added 22 rebounds to earn All-Tournament Team honors as well.
The second half saw Cincinnati take a 36-34 lead, their first since an early 10-8 edge in the first half. The Cajuns closed to within 45-44 on a pair of free throws by Petrakova, then took a 46-45 lead on a lay-up by Petrakova.
Carolyn Alexander led all scorers with 23 points and added 10 rebounds. UC also received 16 points from Debbie Merrill and 13 points from Valerie King.
Cincinnati improves to 7-2, while the Cajuns fall to 3-6.
With the score tied at 10-10, the Cajuns went on a 13-4 run to take a 23-14 lead. From there the Cajuns began to fatigue and correspondingly started to struggle offensively. The Bearcats used an 11-4 run at the end of the half to tie the score at 30-30.
Cincinnati used nine players in the first half, while all five Cajuns starters played 20 minutes with the exception of Petrakova, who sat the final two minutes after committing her third foul.
The Ragin Cajuns played Saturday's championship game without the services of senior center Sarah Richey, who missed her second consecutive game because of illness.
The Cajuns will next play on Saturday, January 4 at 7pm at home against New Mexico State. Tip-off is scheduled for 7pm at Earl K. Long Gym.
