Acadiana native Lacy Prejean returned to the Louisiana Softball coaching staff in July 2024 after serving as the head coach of Northwestern State during the 2023-24 academic year.
Prior to leading the NSU program, she worked on Louisiana’s staff that averaged 49 wins in the non-COVID shortened seasons from 2019-23, claiming the Sun Belt Conference regular season and tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA Tournament each year. In each of those seasons the Ragin' Cajuns also had more than 20 conference wins, including a perfect 25-0 run through the Sun Belt in her return to the staff in 2019.
Louisiana produced 16 all-region players, 26 other all-conference honorees and had four different Sun Belt Player of the Year award winners in her previous stretch on the program’s staff.
As a member of a collegiate coaching staff, Prejean has been to two Women's College World Series, three NCAA Super Regionals, nine NCAA Regionals and won six conference championships.
She has helped develop five NCAA All-Americans throughout her coaching career, including Danyele Gomez, Summer Ellyson and most recently current UL graduate assistant Karly Heath and D1softball and NFCA Freshman All-American Mihyia Davis in the 2023 season.
Prejean, who starred at Carencro High School and twice competed in the Women's College World Series with Alabama, began her coaching career with UL from 2005-07 after an outstanding four-year playing career at Alabama under the guidance of current Cajuns head coach Alyson Habetz and Hall of Fame coach Patrick Murphy from 2000-03, helping lead the Crimson Tide to their first WCWS berth in 2000.
She helped guide Louisiana to three NCAA Tournament appearances and was instrumental in directing and implementing the program’s camps during the fall, winter and summer.
After her first stint with the Ragin’ Cajuns, Prejean returned to her alma mater for the 2008 and 2009 seasons serving as the director of operations alongside Murphy and Habetz for two seasons, experiencing two more trips to the WCWS. She managed many off-field duties that helped round out and add to her coaching toolbox.
Prejean returned home following the 2009 season and entered the private sector, but remained active in the softball community including serving as a travel ball coach for Diamond Sports Hotshots 14u and 16u teams from 2014-17 before finding her way back to the Cajuns coaching staff.
Prejean earned a bachelor’s degree in business (May 2003) and master’s degree in sports administration (May 2009) from Alabama.
The 2000 SEC Freshman of the Year, she was an All-SEC performer at catcher for all four seasons with the Crimson Tide, an Easton All-American in her senior season and started all but seven games during her career. She participated in the 2002 USA Softball National Team Camp and was a member of the 2006 USA Baseball Women’s National team that claimed the gold medal in the Women's Baseball World Cup in Taiwan.
