Big Second Inning Sends LSU Past Louisiana

Cajuns hold firm early, but Tigers capitalize with five-run second
LAFAYETTE – The start of a week-long, four-game homestand for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team was spoiled by No. 17 LSU which used a five-run second inning to break up a scoreless game and went on to claim an 8-0 win in five innings on Tuesday, April 14 at Lamson Park.
The Ragin' Cajuns (22-22) were sharp defensively early, working around a two-out infield single in the opening frame and matching the Tigers' energy out of the gate.
LSU (29-14), however, capitalized in the second, using patience at the plate and timely hitting to break the game open. After three walks loaded the bases, Destiny Harris delivered a two-run single and Jalia Lassiter later added a two-run home run to highlight the inning.
The Tigers pushed across runs the next two innings, reaching the run-rule margin in the fourth inning with Char Lorenz's two-run home run.
Despite the early deficit, Louisiana settled in behind its pitching staff. Sage Hoover provided steady relief, tossing 3.2 innings and limiting LSU to three runs while helping stabilize the game defensively.
Offensively, Louisiana battled but was held without a hit by LSU pitcher Jayden Heavener, who struck out two over five innings. The Ragin' Cajuns worked two walks, including one from Lily Knox in the fifth looking to extend the contest, but were unable to break through.
Louisiana, which came up empty on last week's Spring Break trip to the State of Virginia, had its losing streak extended to a season-high five games.
LSU, 2-1 victors in 10 innings in Baton Rouge in late-February, completed a season sweep of the Ragin' Cajuns for the second straight season and increased their series win streak to four games. The Tigers upped their all-time series lead to 30-16, including a 10-4 mark at Lamson Park.
Heavener became the first pitcher since Oregon's Cheridan Hawkins on April 24, 2015 in Eugene, Oregon to pitch a no-hitter against Louisiana.
