Knox’s Grand Slam Ignites Late Surge for Louisiana

Ragin’ Cajuns claw back with five-run fifth, but JMU’s nine-run third holds up

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A five-run fifth inning, highlighted by Lily Knox's grand slam, brought the Louisiana Softball team within striking distance, but a decisive third inning by James Madison proved to be the difference as the Ragin' Cajuns fell, 15-9, on Sunday, April 12 at Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

For the second straight day the Dukes (19-20, 7-8 SBC) came to life in the third inning, this time tallying nine runs to erase a 4-1 deficit. And for the second straight day, Louisiana (22-21, 5-10 SBC) rallied once again in the fifth inning to extend the contest.

JMU completed the series sweep with the victory while UL came up empty on its Spring Break trip to the state of Virginia.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana showed early control, plating four runs across the first two innings.

An RBI single from Brooke Otto in the first opened the scoring before an RBI single by Natalie Johnson and two-run home run from Haley Hart in the second pushed the Ragin' Cajuns ahead, 4-1.

JMU responded in a big way in the bottom of the third, erupting for nine runs on seven hits. The Dukes capitalized on a missed double play chance and an error by Louisiana and used timely extra-base hits, including a two-RBI triple from Kylee Gleason and a two-run home run from Kendra Lewis, to take a 10-4 lead they would not relinquish.

Trailing 13-4 in the fifth, Louisiana mounted its strongest push. After loading the bases, Knox delivered a grand slam to right-center field, cutting the deficit to 13-8.

The Ragin' Cajuns added another run later in the inning on an RBI single from Cecilia Vasquez to make it 13-9 and chase Payton List from the circle.  JMU brought in pitcher Taylor Johnson to secure the final out and keep Louisiana at arm's length.

The Dukes reclaimed two runs in the bottom half of the fifth to recapture the momentum, then secured the win after Johnson closed with back-to-back innings of no-hit softball.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
At the plate, Louisiana totaled 10 hits, led by Knox (2-for-3, HR, 4 RBI), Hart (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI), and Vasquez (1-for-3, RBI). Knox's grand slam pushed her team-leading series total to five RBI and conference-play total to 11 RBI, joining Otto (12 RBI) in double figures in SBC action.

Natalie Johnson added an RBI, the first of her collegiate rookie season, and Mia Norwood contributed a double as part of a 1-for-3 effort.

Kennedy Marceaux extended her career-best hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the fifth inning that got the two-out rally going. Mia Liscano also extended a lengthy streak, her single in the fifth inning marking a 16th consecutive game reaching base.

In the circle, Lexie Delbrey allowed three runs over 2.1 innings, while Julianne Tipton (4-4) was charged with the loss albeit unearned runs that lifted the Dukes into the lead. Sage Hoover and Bethaney Noble combined to cover the remaining innings.

For James Madison, Lewis (2-for-2, HR, 3 RBI) and Madison Edwards (2-for-3, four runs scored) paced a 12-hit attack. List (6-10) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.0 innings and allowing five runs, while Johnson closed out the final 2.1 scoreless frames.
