Ragin’ Cajuns build early lead before Dukes’ big inning swings the momentum
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Softball team struck first and showed early control, but a decisive third inning from James Madison proved too much to overcome as the Ragin' Cajuns fell, 10–2 (5 inn.), in Game 2 of a Sun Belt Conference series on Saturday, April 11 at Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The win allowed the Dukes (18-20, 6-8 SBC) to clinch the series victory, following up Friday's 6-2 escape. The Ragin' Cajuns (22-20, 5-9 SBC) will attempt to avoid the sweep on Sunday, April 12 in the final game of the series at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) in Harrisonburg.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana wasted little time getting on the board. Mia Liscano sparked the offense with a first-inning single, moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and later crossed home on Kennedy Marceaux's RBI double down the line for a 1-0 lead.
The Ragin' Cajuns' pitching and defense held firm through the first two innings, with starting pitcher Julianne Tipton retiring the first six Dukes batters and keeping the early advantage intact.
However, momentum shifted in the bottom of the third. JMU capitalized on a leadoff double and used timely hitting, combined with a key Louisiana error, to plate six runs — four of them unearned — to seize a 6-1 lead.
The Dukes continued to apply pressure in the fourth, adding three more runs on four hits to stretch the margin to 9-1.
Louisiana extended the game in the top of the fifth inning when Lily Knox delivered an RBI single to score Miki Watts, but the Dukes were able to regain the run-rule advantage in the bottom half after free passes loaded the bases and a run crossed on a wild throw that headed for home plate following a shallow fly out.
Despite a strong start, defensive miscues proved costly for the Cajuns as the Dukes turned limited opportunities into a decisive mid-game surge.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Liscano, Marceaux, Knox and Cecilia Vasquez combined to produce the base hits for Louisiana. Marceaux increased her career-best hitting streak to 10 games while Liscano reached base for a team-leading 14th consecutive game.
The RBI for Marceaux increased her conference-play total to nine, second on the squad, while Knox reached the 20-RBI plateau overall.
Tipton would be charged with nine runs in her first conference start, though only three were earned.
Emma Jo Evans paced JMU going 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored while Emily LeGrand provided the decisive blow with a three-run home run in the third inning.
JMU starting pitcher Taylor Johnson scattered five hits and yielded two runs (only one earned) across five innings to collect her second win in as many days.

Louisiana and JMU conclude the three-game Sun Belt series in Harrisonburg, Virginia on Sunday, April 12 with the series finale set to begin at 11:00 a.m. (CDT) at Bank of the James Field at Veterans Memorial Park.
