Jake Wells enters his fifth season with the Ragin’ Cajuns as an assistant coach, working primarily as the hitting coach and serving as the team’s recruiting coordinator.

Wells brings in a wealth of experience with stops at Campbell University, the University of Alabama, Louisiana Tech and Mississippi State. Throughout his 12-year coaching career, Wells has coached 28 draft picks, eight of which have appeared in the Big Leagues since 2010, guided five All-Americans and assisted on four NCAA Tournament teams, one of which was the national runner-up.

During his first season at Louisiana, the team saw major upgrades offensively. Not only did they increase their team batting average from .242 in 2018 to .280 in 2019, they also upped their total home runs by 34. Additionally, the team saw and uptick in on-base percentage increasing from .323 to .376. Wells played a pivotal role in guiding the team to top-three finishes in batting average, home runs, slugging percentage and stolen bases in the conference.

In his most recent stop at Campbell, he worked predominantly with the team’s hitters with a focus on the catchers. The Camels finished the season with a 35-26 overall record and a trip to a NCAA Regional in Athens, Georgia. With the help of Wells, three players earn All-Big South recognition.

During the 2017 season, he served as the recruiting coordinator and catchers coach at the University of Alabama. Prior to his time with the Tide, he spent the 2015-16 seasons at Louisiana Tech as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator. Under his tutelage, the Bulldogs improved in nearly hitting statistical category, including tying the program record for triples with 19 and notching 112 doubles and 2,052 at-bats (both third-most all-time) in 2016.

Wells mentored Louisiana Tech’s first Johnny Bench Award finalist, Brent Diaz, who was the program’s first catcher to pick up Conference USA All-Freshman Team accolades. Diaz was also later drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Before arriving in Ruston, the Devine, Texas, native had a two-year stint at Mississippi State (2013-14) as the volunteer assistant coach, where he saw two catchers under his guidance go on to sign professional contracts.

As a member of the Bulldogs’ staff, he helped the team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a finalist finish in the 2013 College World Series.

Prior to his time at Mississippi State, Wells spent two years as the head coach at Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala., beginning in 2008 as an assistant and ending with him in the head coaching role for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Over his five seasons in Marion, Wells coached 11 players who earned All-Conference and All-Region accolades.

As a player, Wells was an all-state catcher at Devine (Texas) High School. After his prep days, he continued his career at Blinn (Texas) College, Lurleen B. Wallace (Ala.) Community College and eventually at the University of Montevallo, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and health promotions.

Throughout his early career, Wells served as camp manager for youth baseball camps in Montevallo, Ala., and Devine, Texas, while also managing the Alabama Special Olympics State Tournament.

He played professional baseball in the United League with the Laredo Broncos in 2009 and 2010. Wells is married to the former Melissa Sherrod of Longview, Texas. The couple has a son, Beckett James Wells.
