Louisiana Edged by Memphis in Five-Set Battle

Ragin’ Cajuns battle through three tightly contested sets before Tigers escape
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team battled through three hard-fought sets and pushed Memphis to the limit before falling in a five-set thriller (23-25, 25-16, 27-29, 33-31, 11-15) on Saturday, September 5 at E.K. Long Gym.

The Ragin' Cajuns (2-3) finished with the higher hitting percentage and held an advantage at the net, but Memphis (1-4) used a 74-64 edge in kills to escape with the win. Louisiana hit .237 for the match compared to .218 for the Tigers and totaled 10 blocks to Memphis' eight.

The loss snapped UL's two-match win streak and spoiled the squad's bid for a clean sweep of the week's homestand and the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic.

Lolo Lambert powered Louisiana's attack with a match-high-tying 29 points, totaling a career-high 25 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and two aces. She piled up double digits in kills for a fourth consecutive match and increased her team season-leading total to 65 kills.

Harley Krause followed with 14 kills on .250 hitting, posting her highest output as a Ragin' Cajun. Sarah Schnell added 10 kills and Jazmine Gaston chipped in seven kills.

Rhyan Miciotto handed out 30 assists and Ryleigh Garis added 22. Kennedy Gustafson paced the back row with 14 digs, followed by Sophia Armstrong with 13, while Emily Williams led the Cajuns at the net with six blocks.

Memphis was led by Caitlyn Little, who recorded 26 kills on .412 hitting and added 18 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana responded to a narrow opening-set loss with its best offensive showing of the afternoon in the second. The Cajuns committed only one attacking error while landing 15 kills on 26 swings for a .538 hitting percentage, cruising to a 25-16 win that evened the match.

The momentum swung back and forth over the next two frames.

Louisiana held set point at 27-26 in the third following a Sarah Schnell kill, but Memphis answered with three consecutive points for a 29-27 decision. The Cajuns returned the favor in a marathon fourth set, outlasting the Tigers 33-31 behind 20 kills to force the decisive fifth frame.

In the fifth, Louisiana crawled back within striking distance after falling behind 6-2 and later pulled within 11-10 on a Lolo Lambert kill. However, Memphis responded with three straight points to take control.
