Offense Sets the Tone in Louisiana’s Sweep of Hampton

Schnell leads balanced offense with 10 kills as Cajuns deliver season-best hitting performance
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball team snapped a three-match losing streak with its most efficient offensive performance of the season on Friday, September 11, never trailing in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) sweep of Hampton in the FAMU Tournament at the Al Lawson Center in Tallahassee, Florida.
The Ragin' Cajuns (3-5) hit above .340 in every set and finished with a season-high .382 hitting percentage (45 K, 11 E, 89 TA). Ten different players recorded multiple kills, fueling a 45-28 advantage as Louisiana committed just 11 attack errors in 89 attempts.
Louisiana complemented its balanced offense with nine blocks and seven service aces, limiting Hampton (2-6) to a .112 hitting percentage.
The Ragin' Cajuns posted 16 kills in each of the first two sets, hitting .406 in the opener and .393 in the second before closing at .345.
Sarah Schnell led Louisiana with 10 kills on 14 swings, hitting .571 and adding five digs and two blocks. She began the match perfect through her first 10 swings, leading the charge as UL opened a commanding lead.
Emily Williams delivered seven kills without an error in eight attempts for an .875 percentage, while Lolo Lambert supplied seven kills, eight digs and three blocks. Taylor Gaines added six kills.
Rhyan Miciotto directed the offense with 27 assists and served a team-high two aces. Defensively, Kennedy Gustafson collected 10 digs and Gigi Smith joined Lambert and Williams with three blocks apiece as the Cajuns out-blocked the opposition for the second straight match and sixth time in eight outings this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Louisiana built an 18-12 lead in the opening set before Hampton rallied within 20-19. The Ragin' Cajuns promptly answered with five consecutive points, receiving two kills and a solo block from Lambert during the closing stretch. Williams and Schnell combined on the set-ending block.
Schnell powered the early stages of the second set, recording six kills as Louisiana quickly established a 9-3 advantage. The Ragin' Cajuns stretched the margin to 13-5 and later 20-9, holding Hampton to six kills and a .032 hitting percentage.
After three early ties in the final set, Louisiana broke a 3-3 deadlock with four straight points, finished off by a Sophia Armstrong ace and Smith solo block. The Ragin' Cajuns maintained control while receiving three kills apiece from Marlee Ervin and Jazmine Gaston and two each from Lindsey Henry and Harley Krause.
Ervin supplied kills for Louisiana's final two points before match point – each time keeping the Pirates at arm's length to protect a four-point edge – and Smith sealed the sweep with a block.
