Cajuns Withstand Coastal Rallies; Earn 12-11 Win at SBC Baseball Championships

Louisiana records season-high 17 hits; score 10+ in back-to-back SBC Tournament games for first time since 1998

Louisiana (36-21), the No. 7 seed in the tournament and looking to secure its fourth trip to the NCAA Regionals in the past five seasons, advanced to face sixth-seeded Texas State (35-22) in a winner's bracket game on Thursday at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen in the Lafayette area on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.

No. 2-seeded Coastal Carolina (36-20), which dropped its third contest to the Cajuns in the past four games, will face third-seeded App State (30-23) in an elimination game on Thursday at 9 a.m.

Louisiana, which recorded a season-high 17 hits and scored in double figures in back-to-back SBC Tournament games for the first time since 1998, built a 7-0 lead after four innings – highlighted by Steven Spalitta's three-run home run in a five-run third. The Chanticleers fought back, beginning with homers by Blagen Pado and Walker Mitchell in a four-run fifth before Pado belted a three-run homer in the sixth to tie the game at 7-7.

The Ragin' Cajuns responded in the seventh, scoring three times as Colt Brown gave Louisiana an 8-7 lead when he scored on a throwing error. Owen Galt delivered an RBI single to drive in Drew Markle before scoring on Mark Collins', two-out bunt single for a 10-7 lead.

Louisiana added two more runs in the eighth after a 53-minute weather delay as Brown drove in Mandino with an RBI single and Lee Amedee scored on a two-out error.

Coastal responded with four runs in the ninth inning with Blake Barthol and Rex Watson each hitting RBI singles and Trace Mazon adding a two-run triple to chase reliever Tyler Papenbrock (3-0).

With the tying run at third, Parker Smith relieved Papenbrock and fanned Brice Estep for the second out of the inning before Hayden Pearson got Jackson Winer to hit a chopper to third and record his second save of the season.

Andrew Herrmann pitched 5.0 innings and allowed four hits with four strikeouts for Louisiana. Brown finished 3-for-4 at the plate for the Ragin' Cajuns with Markle and Collins each adding a pair of hits.

Jaxon Appleman (0-3) took the loss in relief for Coastal Carolina. Starter Luke Jones tossed 2.0 innings and allowed a run for the Chanticleers before relievers Case Bosch and Daniel Parker combined to allow six runs in 1.1 innings.

Mazon led Coastal with three hits with Barthol and Pago each finishing 2-for-4.
