Herrmann notches sixth quality start as Cajuns improve to 10-4 in one-run games

TROY, Ala. – Louisiana recorded 14 hits, built an early lead and held off a late rally to defeat Troy, 7-6, in the middle game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series Saturday afternoon at Riddle-Pace Field.

Andrew Herrmann (4-2) delivered his sixth quality start of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings to earn the win for Louisiana (22-16, 7-10 SBC). Garrett Carter pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his third save of the season.

The 14 hits marked a season high in a nine-inning game for the Cajuns, matching their output in a 15-inning game against Maryland on Feb. 22 and falling one shy of the overall season high of 15 against Missouri State on Feb. 14.

Rigoberto Hernandez and Blaze Rodriguez each collected three hits to lead Louisiana, while Lee Amedee and Colt Brown added two hits apiece. Donovan LaSalle hit a 437-foot home run in a three-run third inning and drove in three runs.

Troy (19-20, 9-8 SBC) also finished with 14 hits, with every starter recording at least one. Drew Nelson led the Trojans with three hits, while Jimmy Janicki, Steven Meier and Nolan Book added two each.

Louisiana opened the scoring in the third inning against Troy starter Tommy Egan (4-2). Mark Collins drew a leadoff walk before LaSalle launched a two-run home run to left-center, giving the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

Amedee later doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by Brown to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Cajuns added two more runs in the fourth inning. Rodriguez, Josh Lim and Collins opened the frame with consecutive singles. LaSalle drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Lim scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Drew Markle to make it 5-0.

Troy responded in the bottom of the fourth. Nelson hit a solo home run, and after a two-out walk to Caden Reeves, Aaron Piasecki delivered an RBI triple to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Louisiana answered in the fifth as Hernandez and Brown opened with singles. Hernandez scored on an error, and Brown later came home during a rundown to push the lead to 7-2.

Troy chipped away again in the sixth on an RBI double by Reeves, then pulled within one in the seventh. Josh Pyne singled and scored on a double by Janicki before Meier hit a two-run home run to make it 7-6.

Carter entered in the eighth inning with two runners on and one out. He struck out Pyne and escaped the jam by inducing a flyout from Janicki near the fence.

In the ninth, Meier singled and Nelson walked to put the tying run on base, but Carter struck out Book and retired Sean Darnell and pinch-hitter Houston Markham to end the game.

Louisiana recorded double-digit hits in consecutive games for the first time since Feb. 27-28 against UC San Diego. The 14 hits also marked a season high in a road game.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will be available on ESPN+ with fans able to listen locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network.
