Louisiana Storms Back After Delay In 11-6 Win Over Dallas Baptist

Ragin' Cajuns claim non-conference series; finale scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.

DALLAS – For the second straight day, Louisiana jumped out to an early lead, fell behind, and rallied late as the Ragin' Cajuns defeated Dallas Baptist, 11-6, on Saturday to clinch the weekend series and extend their winning streak to five games.

Louisiana (12-3) capitalized on eight walks and a school record-tying eight hit batters while scoring in six of its nine at-bats. The Cajuns broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning following a 45-minute weather delay to reclaim the lead for good.

Louisiana will look to complete a 4-0 week on Sunday in the series finale scheduled for 1 p.m. Freshman Sawyer Pruitt (2-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Cajuns, with DBU countering with right-hander Ryan Borberg (0-1, 8.10 ERA).

Eight different Cajuns scored in the contest. Lee Amedee had two hits and drove in three runs to lead the offense, while Donovan LaSalle homered for the second consecutive game and finished with two RBIs. LaSalle, Colt Brown and Blaze Rodriguez each scored twice.

JR Tollett (3-0) worked through the first three innings with ease and recovered after Dallas Baptist's five-run fourth inning to earn the win. Jerrod Jenkins (1-2), the second of six Patriots pitchers, was charged with the loss after surrendering the lead in the sixth.

Louisiana struck first with two runs in the opening inning off DBU starter Jared Schaeffer. Drew Markle drew a one-out walk before Amedee singled. Rigoberto Hernandez followed with an RBI single to score Markle, and Brown added another run-scoring single for a 2-0 lead.

The Cajuns stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third when LaSalle launched a solo home run to left field and pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the fourth as Brown scored on a single by Maddox Mandino.

Tollett faced the minimum through the first three innings, allowing just one hit that was erased by the first of three Louisiana double plays. Dallas Baptist (8-7) answered in the fourth.

Cooper Neville led off with a walk and the Cajuns failed to record an out on Jake Bennett's ground ball. Chayton Krauss drove in DBU's first run with a single and, after Ben Tryon added another hit, Ryan Martin sent a drive just inside the right-field foul pole for a grand slam that gave the Patriots a 5-4 lead.

Play was halted after the fifth inning due to lightning in the area, and Louisiana seized momentum when play resumed.

Brown drew a one-out walk in the sixth before Steven Spalitta dropped a single inside the third-base line to put runners on the corners. The runners executed a double steal, allowing Brown to score the tying run. Rodrigues and Mandino followed with walks to load the bases.

Michael Benzer relieved Jenkins but walked pinch-hitter Mark Collins on four pitches to force in the go-ahead run. Markle was then hit by a pitch and Amedee drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home two more runs and give Louisiana an 8-5 advantage.

Dallas Baptist trimmed the lead to 8-6 in the seventh when pinch-hitter Dylan Schlaegel homered off Louisiana reliever Ty Roman.

The Cajuns responded in the eighth after three consecutive hit batters loaded the bases. Amedee delivered a two-run single to extend the lead before LaSalle added an RBI groundout in the ninth.

Roman allowed just the solo homer over 2.1 innings in his first relief appearance for Louisiana. Parker Smith tossed 1.1 scoreless innings before Cody Brasch recorded the final out in the ninth.
