Singles surge powers Ragin’ Cajuns past Eagles to begin ITA College Tennis Weekend at Cajun Courts

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Women's Tennis team stretched its winning streak to nine matches on Friday, March 27, defeating Georgia Southern, 4–2, to kick off ITA College Tennis Weekend at Cajun Courts.

The ITA College Tennis weekend celebration continues on Sunday, March 29 with Louisiana taking on Texas State at 11:00 a.m. The match is free and open to the public and will feature free food and giveaways provided by Team E and the Acadiana Community Tennis Association.

Louisiana (11–3) dropped the doubles point to start Friday's match, but responded with four singles victories to secure the dual match trimuph – continuing its run of success which dates back to February 14.

The Ragin' Cajuns quickly seized momentum in singles play. Ana Martinez Vaquero (8-1) tied the match at 1–1 with a decisive 6–4, 6–1 victory over Mackenzie Leopold at No. 5 singles. Shortly after, Angelique Berrat (10-1) gave UL its first lead with a 6–3, 6–2 win against Evelyn Warkentin at the top position.

Georgia Southern (7–9) evened the match when Franzi Heinemann defeated Marilou Bressan, 6–1, 7–5, at No. 3 singles, but Louisiana regained control from there.

Safia Zenbi (6-4) delivered one of the match's most dominant performances at No. 2 singles, rallying after a tight first set to defeat Angelina Mihajlovic, 7–6 (7–3), 6–0. The victory regained the match lead for the Ragin' Cajuns and brought them to the brink of the match clincher.

The clinching point came from Martina Della Gora, who battled through a pair of tightly contested sets to defeat Amelie Rosadoro, 7–5, 7–6 (7–5), at No. 4 singles. Della Gora (9-1) recovered from a 4-0 deficit in the second-set tiebreaker, avoiding a third set.

Doubles play opened the match with Georgia Southern claiming wins on courts one and three to take the early point. The response from the Ragin' Cajuns in singles earned them their first-ever win over the Eagles at Cajun Courts.

Individually, several lengthy win streaks were extended. Berrat and Della Gora claimed their eight consecutive victory, Vaqero extended her personal win streak to seven matches and Zenbi posted a sixth straight win.

Louisiana picked up its second victory over a Sun Belt Conference foe, Friday's win adding to a 4-0 sweep of Southern Miss back on March 14.
