Louisiana returns to SBC action on Friday against visiting ULM
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana received five strong innings from Ty Roman and a three-run home run from freshman Josh Lim to defeat in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana, 9-3, on Tuesday night at M.L. Tigue Moore Field at Russo Park.
Roman (2-2) allowed just one hit through the first five innings – a two-out single by Justin Williams in the second – as Louisiana (17-8) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Louisiana broke through in the fourth inning against SLU starter Luke Lirette (1-1). Lim and Colt Brown were each hit by pitches to open the frame before Luke Barbier entered in relief and walked Lee Amedee to load the bases. Rigoberto Hernandez followed with a double to left field, scoring Lim and Brown.
Drew Markle added an RBI single to bring home Amedee for a 3-0 lead. After Steven Spalitta advanced runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, Jayce LaCava delivered a two-run single off Chase Ambrose. LaCava then stole second and third and scored on a groundout by Blaze Rodriguez, capping a six-run inning.
SLU (13-12) answered in the sixth with three runs to chase Roman. Former Cajun Ben Robichaux walked, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a single by Brody Capps. Another former Cajun – Connor Cuff – followed with a two-run home run to trim the deficit to 6-3.
The Cajuns responded in the seventh to put the game away. Rodriguez and Noah Lewis drew one-out walks ahead of Lim, who launched a 414-foot, three-run homer to center off Harris Waghalter to extend the lead to 9-3.
Cody Brasch tossed 2.2 hitless innings for Louisiana with four strikeouts. Freshman Cole Flanagan closed the game by retiring the side on nine pitches with a strikeout.
LaCava, who entered the game with five at-bats on the season, went 2-for-3 with a double for Louisiana while Amedee added an opposite-field double in the second inning. Roman scattered three hits and struck out four for the Ragin' Cajuns, who improved to 13-4 at home and 7-0 in midweek contests.
