LAFAYETTE – Senior left-hander Andrew Herrmann tossed his second complete game of the season, and Louisiana pushed across the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to defeat South Alabama, 4-3, on Saturday before 3,947 fans at M. L. 'Tigue' Moore Field at Russo Park.
Â
The win evened the weekend series for Louisiana at one game apiece. The teams will meet in the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Louisiana (14-5, 1-1 SBC) is expected to start junior JR Tollett (3-0, 6.55 ERA), while South Alabama (13-6, 1-1 SBC) will counter with right-hander Daniel Gonzalez (1-1, 2.37 ERA).
Â
Sunday's finale will be streamed live on ESPN+ with fans able to listen to the game locally on KPEL-FM (96.5) and worldwide on the Varsity Network app.
Â
After surrendering a two-run homer to Jaguars catcher Duncan Mathews during a 25-pitch first inning, Herrmann (3-0) settled in and needed just 80 pitches over the final eight frames to record his second complete-game in his last three outings. He finished with a five-hitter, issuing no walks while striking out nine. The complete game was his second of the season, tying him for the national lead.
Â
Louisiana broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning. Freshman Colt Brown opened the frame with a double off South Alabama reliever Jake Middleton (0-1) and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Maddox Mandino. Blaze Rodriguez followed with a ground ball to the left side of shortstop Marc Stephens, whose throw home was late as Brown slid across with the go-ahead run. Brown's double extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Â
South Alabama struck first in the opening inning when Brennon Wright was hit by a pitch before Mathews delivered a two-run homer.
Â
Louisiana answered in the bottom half against starter Ryland Bozenhard when Donovan LaSalle was hit by a pitch and later scored on Brown's sacrifice fly. The Cajuns tied the game in the second after freshman Josh Lim was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by freshman Noah Lewis, and scored on a wild pitch. Louisiana took a 3-2 lead in the sixth on Lewis' sacrifice fly.
Â
Following Mathews' home run and a two-out single by Blake Guerin, Herrmann retired 17 of the next 18 batters, striking out nine during that stretch. South Alabama tied the game in the eighth when Mike Young doubled on a ground ball that hopped over the glove of third baseman Drew Markle, and Nathan Wood followed with a one-out double to left to score Young.
Â
Herrmann closed the door in the ninth, retiring the side in order to complete the 105-pitch effort.
Â
Lewis finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI to lead Louisiana, which outhit the Jaguars, 6-5. Brown's double extended his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games on the season while Lim recorded his first collegiate hit in his first start.
