Louisiana sits in second through five events on women's side; several Cajuns headed to finals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Henry Lyon captured the men's 5,000-meter title and Lily Murray shattered her own school record in the women's weight throw to lead the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns on the opening day of the 2026 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Through five of 17 scored events on the women's side, Louisiana sits in second place with 33 points, three behind Texas State's 36. The Cajuns' men's squad stands seventh heading into Tuesday's final day, which begins at 10 a.m. Live coverage is available on ESPN+.

Lyon delivered Louisiana's first individual championship of the meet, clocking 14 minutes, 34.11 seconds to win the men's 5,000 meters and become the program's second champion in the event. He was one of three Cajuns to score in the race, as Jackson Jarrett placed sixth in 14:40.50 and Mason Haley finished eighth in 14:55.68.

Earlier in the day, Lyon posted the top qualifying time in the men's 3,000 meters at 4:13.95. Teammate Matthew Maynard also advanced to the final with a fourth-place qualifying mark of 4:24.17.

On the women's side, Murray opened the scoring with a third-place finish in the weight throw. Her final attempt measured 64 feet, 10½ inches, breaking her previous school record of 64-7¼ set earlier this season at the LSU Purple Tiger.

Louisiana placed three runners in the top five of the women's 5,000 meters. Ella Segura finished second in 16:43.31, Isabelle Russell was third in 16:43.64 and Chloé Crowell added a fifth-place showing in 17:03.62.

Reem Tammam recorded a fifth-place finish in the women's long jump with a mark of 19-4¾. The Cajuns also earned points in the distance medley relays, with the men's team placing third in 10:10.39 and the women's squad finishing sixth in 12:00.15.

Louisiana advanced several athletes to Tuesday's finals. Caemon Scott posted the top qualifying time in the men's 400 meters at 47.96. Camren Hardy (6.75) and Mark Daley (6.81) each moved on to the final in the 60 meters and were joined by Mekhi Boutte in advancing to the 200-meter final.

Kobe Mendez (8.04) and Michael Frazier III (8.18) qualified for the final in the 60-meter hurdles. Joshua Quintana (1:54.19) and Reed Boudreaux (1:54.64) advanced in the 800 meters.

For the women, Madison Bailey qualified for the 800-meter final in 2:13.35, while Juliana Courville earned a spot in the mile final with a time of 4:57.03.
