Cold First-Half Shooting Too Much For Cajuns Against Coastal

Louisiana has four-game win streak snapped; will visit ODU in makeup game on Monday

LAFAYETTE – Coastal Carolina came into Thursday's Sun Belt Conference game against Louisiana having won six of their last eight conference games thanks to sharpshooting guard play.

The trend continued for the Chanticleers as they opened a 12-point, first-half lead and withstood a Louisiana second-half comeback, topping the Cajuns 69-65 at the Cajundome.

The loss ended a four-game winning streak for the Cajuns (9-17, 6-7 SBC), who were plagued by poor first-half shooting.

Joshua Beadle led the Chants (16-11, 8-6 SBC) with 29 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including both of his 3-point attempts. AJ Dancler added 15 points, while Rasheed Jones chipped in 10.

For Louisiana, Dorian Finister and Jaxon Olvera took game honors with 19 points each, while De'Vion Lavergne added 15.

The Cajuns never led in the contest.  The game was tied at five apiece after a Todd Jones, Jr. free throw , but the Chanticleers reeled off eleven straight points, with Beadle scoring six to take a 16-5 lead at the 13:04 mark before Finister's layup broke a five-minute stretch without a field goal.

Louisiana answered with an 8-0 run of their own to cut the lead to three after two Olvera free throws, but Coastal continued to take advantage of poor shooting by Louisiana and stretched their lead to 32-20 before the Cajuns chipped away, getting to 36-29 at the break on a Finister putback before the buzzer.

The Cajuns made just nine of their first 33 shots (27.3 percent) in the first half, including 2-for-12 from beyond the arc, while the visitors hit five triples and made 9 of 11 free throws in the opening stanza.

Louisiana turned up the defensive intensity in the second half, forcing 12 Chanticleer turnovers to get within two, 43-41, after a Lavergne triple. It was still a two-point margin, 56-54, at the 6:52 mark, but the Cajuns came up empty on four different possessions where they had a chance to take the lead or tie the game.

The closest the Cajuns would get was 62-61 with 1:43 to play after a pair of Finister free throws and had a chance to take the lead after the Cajuns got a defensive stop.

But Lavergne's turnaround jumper missed the mark with 1:04 to play and Dancler nailed a triple to make it a four-point game.

Coastal outrebounded the Cajuns, 34-28, with balanced work on the boards. Five different Chants had at least four rebounds, with Nadjrick Peat leading the way with six. Finister was tops for Louisiana with seven.

For the contest, Louisiana forced 19 turnovers, while committing only 10.

Louisiana now heads to Norfolk, Va., to take on Old Dominion for a Monday contest – a makeup game that was postponed because of inclement weather on January 24th. The Ragin' Cajuns will return home for their final two contests at the Cajundome, hosting Arkansas State and Texas State next Thursday and Saturday.
